Rivalries & Drivatars

Beyond the core campaign and multiplayer, Forza Motorsport 7 offers two distinct, yet interconnected, ways to test your skill against the best: Rivalries and the ever-present Drivatars. Mastering both is key to not only improving your lap times but also earning valuable Credits and XP.

Understanding Drivatars

Drivatars are AI opponents in Forza Motorsport 7 that learn from the driving habits of real players on your Xbox Live friends list and the wider Forza community. This means they don't just follow a pre-programmed racing line; they brake, accelerate, and take corners with the nuances of human error and skill. This makes every race feel more dynamic and less predictable.

  • Drivatar Difficulty: You can adjust Drivatar difficulty in the pre-race menu for most single-player events (e.g., Free Play, Career Mode). Options range from New Racer to Unbeatable. Start with a comfortable difficulty and gradually increase it as your skills improve. Higher difficulties offer greater Credit and XP bonuses.
  • Impact on Career: In the Forza Driver's Cup career mode, Drivatar difficulty directly affects your championship points and the challenge of each series. Don't be afraid to experiment to find the sweet spot that challenges you without frustrating you.
  • Your Own Drivatar: Your driving style also contributes to your Drivatar, which races in other players' games. The better you drive, the more competitive your Drivatar becomes, potentially earning you passive Credit rewards.

Conquering Rivalries

Rivalries are time trial challenges where you compete against the "ghost" of another player's best lap time on a specific track and car combination. This is where you truly hone your driving lines, braking points, and acceleration control.

To access Rivalries:

  1. From the main menu, navigate to Rivals.
  2. You'll see various categories, including:
    • Featured Rivals: Special, often time-limited, challenges with unique car restrictions and potentially higher rewards.
    • Monthly Rivals: Challenges that reset each month, often focusing on specific car classes or tracks.
    • Community Rivals: A vast selection of challenges created by the community, offering immense variety.
    • My Rivals: Challenges where you've previously set a time or are directly challenging a friend.
  3. Select a category, then choose a specific event. You'll be presented with the track, car class restrictions, and often a specific car to use.
Rivalries Strategy Guide:
  • Choose Your Opponent Wisely: When starting a Rivalry, you'll see a leaderboard. Initially, challenge a ghost that's just a few seconds faster than your current best. This provides a tangible target without being overwhelming. As you improve, move up the leaderboard.
  • Analyze the Ghost: Pay close attention to the ghost's braking points, turn-in points, and acceleration out of corners. Where do they gain time? Where do they lose it? The ghost is your best teacher.
  • Clean Laps are Key: Only "clean" laps (without hitting walls, cutting corners, or using rewind) count towards the leaderboard. A dirty lap will have a small red exclamation mark next to its time. Focus on consistency and precision over raw speed initially.
  • Car Tuning: For many Rivalries, especially in higher classes, a well-tuned car can make a significant difference. Experiment with different tunes or download popular community tunes from the Tune Setup menu before starting the event. Look for tunes specifically designed for the track you're on.
  • Practice Sections: Don't feel pressured to complete a perfect lap every time. Use the first few laps to learn the track and identify challenging sections. Focus on perfecting those sections individually before attempting a full clean lap.
  • Rewind Wisely: The rewind feature is your friend in Rivalries. If you make a mistake, rewind a few seconds and try that section again. This saves time and frustration. Remember, using rewind does not "dirty" your lap.
  • Track Knowledge: Familiarity with the track is paramount. The more laps you put in, the better you'll understand its nuances, elevation changes, and optimal racing lines.
  • Tire Management: While less critical in shorter Rivalry runs, understanding how tire temperature and wear affect grip can give you an edge, especially on longer tracks or in endurance-style Rivalries.

Rewards from Rivalries & Drivatars

Both Rivalries and Drivatar-based races offer substantial rewards:

  • Credits: Essential for purchasing new cars, upgrades, and cosmetic items. Higher Drivatar difficulties and better Rivalry times yield more Credits.
  • XP (Experience Points): Contributes to your Driver Level, unlocking new cars, gear, and loot crates.
  • Loot Crates: Occasionally awarded for completing certain Rivalry challenges or leveling up, containing cars, mods, and driver gear.
  • Sense of Accomplishment: The satisfaction of beating a challenging Drivatar or climbing the Rivalries leaderboard is a reward in itself!

By actively engaging with both the dynamic Drivatar system and the precise challenges of Rivalries, you'll not only become a faster, more skilled driver but also unlock a deeper, more rewarding experience in Forza Motorsport 7.
