Accessing the Spawn Menu

The spawn menu is your gateway to all the objects and entities available in Garry's Mod. You can open it by pressing the 'Q' key by default. The menu is divided into several categories, such as 'Entities', 'Props', 'Weapons', and 'Vehicles'.

Entities vs. Props

It's important to understand the difference between entities and props:

  • Props: These are static or physics-enabled objects that you can spawn and manipulate. They are primarily for building and visual purposes. Examples include furniture, barrels, and structural elements.
  • Entities: These are more complex objects that often have functionality. This includes NPCs, weapons, vehicles, and interactive elements like buttons or doors.

Spawning Objects

To spawn an object:

  1. Open the spawn menu (Q).
  2. Navigate through the categories to find the desired object.
  3. Left-click on the object's icon.
  4. Aim at the ground or surface where you want to place it.
  5. Left-click again to spawn the object.

Manipulating Spawned Objects

Once an object is spawned, you can interact with it using your tools:

  • Physics Gun: The primary tool for grabbing, moving, rotating, and freezing spawned objects.
  • Tool Gun: Used for applying various functionalities and modifications to entities, such as welding, coloring, or adding interactive elements.
  • Weld Tool: Connects two or more props together so they act as a single unit.

Prop Categories and Types

Within the 'Props' tab, you'll find further subdivisions:

  • Physics Props: These are affected by physics and can be moved, thrown, and collide with other objects.
  • World Models: These are typically static and are used for environmental details.
  • Ragdolls: These are character models that can be posed and manipulated.

Understanding these categories helps you choose the right object for your needs.

Searching for Props

If you know the name of a prop you want to spawn, you can use the search bar at the top of the spawn menu. This is incredibly useful for quickly finding specific items without browsing through numerous categories.

Favorite Items

To speed up your workflow, you can 'favorite' frequently used props and entities. Right-click on an item in the spawn menu and select 'Add to Favorites'. Your favorites will appear in a dedicated tab for quick access.

Example: Building a Simple Scene

  1. Open the spawn menu (Q).
  2. Go to 'Props' > 'Furniture'.
  3. Spawn a 'chair' and a 'table'.
  4. Use the Physics Gun to move the chair and table into a desired arrangement.
  5. Go to 'Props' > 'Misc'.
  6. Spawn a 'barrel' and place it near the table.
  7. Go to 'Entities' > 'Weapons'.
  8. Spawn a 'gravity gun' and place it on the table.
