1.8. Saving and Loading Creations

The sandbox nature of Garry's Mod allows for incredible creativity, from intricate contraptions to sprawling architectural marvels. Once you've invested time and effort into building something, the ability to save and load your creations is essential. This feature ensures that your hard work isn't lost and can be revisited, shared, or expanded upon later.

Garry's Mod offers a robust system for saving and loading what are known as 'saves' or 'propsaves'. These saves capture the state of entities, their positions, properties, and any constraints or wires attached to them. This allows you to essentially freeze a moment in time and recall it later. The primary tools for this are the 'Save' and 'Load' buttons found in the spawn menu, typically under the 'Utilities' tab.

To save a creation, first, ensure all the entities you want to save are present in the world. Select the 'Save' tool from the spawn menu. You'll be presented with a dialog box where you can name your save. Choose a descriptive name that will help you remember what the save contains. You can also choose to save specific entities or all entities in the world. Once named, click 'Save'. Garry's Mod will then create a file, usually in your garrysmod/saves/ directory, containing all the data for your saved creation.

Loading a save is just as straightforward. Open the spawn menu and navigate to the 'Utilities' tab, then select the 'Load' tool. A list of your saved creations will appear. Select the save you wish to load, and then click 'Load'. The entities from that save will be spawned back into your current Garry's Mod session. You can then interact with them, modify them, or use them as a foundation for new builds.

It's important to understand what gets saved. When you save a contraption, it saves the individual entities, their positions, rotations, and any settings you've applied. If you've used tools like the Weld tool, Rope tool, or Wiremod components, these connections and configurations are also saved. However, it's crucial to note that saves are generally tied to the specific content that was used. If you load a save that relies on addons or content packs you no longer have installed, those entities might not appear correctly, or at all.

For more complex creations or when sharing with others, consider using the 'Export' feature, often found in conjunction with save tools or specific addon interfaces. Exporting can sometimes create more self-contained files or allow for more granular control over what is saved. Furthermore, many community-made tools and addons offer advanced saving and loading functionalities, such as the ability to save specific groups of props or create blueprints that can be easily shared and spawned by other players. Always ensure you have the necessary content packs installed when loading saves created by others, or be prepared for missing entities.
