Welding and Freezing Objects

Master Garry's Mod Weld & Freeze tools. Permanently attach props with welds and immobilize objects for stable structures and contraptions.

Welding and Freezing Objects

In the world of Garry's Mod, objects rarely stay put on their own. To create stable structures, functional vehicles, and intricate contraptions, you need to master the art of welding and freezing. These two fundamental tools allow you to bind objects together and prevent them from moving, forming the bedrock of most complex creations.

The Weld tool is your primary means of permanently attaching props together. Found in the "Tools" tab of the spawn menu, the Weld tool allows you to create a rigid connection between two or more objects. This is essential for building anything that needs to maintain its shape and integrity under physics simulation.

Using the Weld Tool:

  1. Select the Weld Tool: Navigate to the "Tools" tab and choose the Weld tool.
  2. First Click: Aim at the first prop you want to weld and left-click. A small indicator will appear.
  3. Second Click: Aim at the second prop and left-click again. A weld will be created between the two points.
  4. Multiple Welds: You can continue clicking on additional props to create a chain of welds, effectively joining them all together.

Weld Tool Properties:

The Weld tool has several important properties you can adjust:

  • Weld Type: You can choose between a standard "Weld" (rigid connection) or a "Rope" (flexible connection, like a chain).
  • Breakable: You can make welds breakable under certain stress, allowing for more dynamic destruction.
  • Color: While not affecting the weld itself, this can help visually distinguish different types of welds if you use multiple.

The Freeze tool, also found in the "Tools" tab, serves a different but equally important purpose: preventing objects from moving or being affected by physics. This is invaluable for creating static elements in your builds or for temporarily holding props in place while you work.

Using the Freeze Tool:

  • Select the Freeze Tool: Choose it from the "Tools" tab.
  • Apply to Props: Aim at a prop and left-click to freeze it. It will become immobile.
  • Unfreeze: Aim at a frozen prop and right-click to unfreeze it.
  • Radius Freeze: Some versions of the Freeze tool allow you to freeze all props within a certain radius, which can be very efficient for large structures.

When to Use Freeze:

  • Static Scenery: Freeze buildings, terrain features, or decorative elements that should not move.
  • Temporary Stability: Freeze parts of a contraption while you work on other sections, preventing unintended movement.
  • Creating Platforms: Freeze a series of stacked props to create a stable platform for building upon.

Combining Weld and Freeze:

These tools are often used in conjunction. You might weld several components of a vehicle together and then freeze the entire vehicle in place while you add cosmetic details or test its stability. Understanding when to weld for structural integrity and when to freeze for immobility is key to successful GMod engineering.

Mastering welding and freezing will allow you to construct everything from simple furniture to complex, functional machines, forming the foundation of your Garry's Mod building endeavors.
