Liberating occupied areas is a core gameplay loop in Ghost of Tsushima, essential for weakening the Mongol forces and restoring Tsushima to its people. Each liberated territory provides significant benefits, including resources, new fast travel points, and contributions to your overall Legend progression. The types of occupied areas include:
- Mongol Camps: Smaller enemy encampments that often contain valuable resources like Iron and Steel.
- Mongol Outposts: More fortified locations that require a more strategic approach to clear.
- Mongol Strongholds: The largest and most heavily defended enemy bases, often housing key objectives or high-value loot. Liberating these strongholds is particularly rewarding and often yields Gold, a rare crafting material.
Benefits of Liberation:
- Resources: Gain access to Iron, Steel, and Gold, crucial for upgrading your weapons and armor.
- Fast Travel: Liberated areas unlock as fast travel points, allowing for quicker traversal of the map.
- Legend Progression: Completing these activities contributes to your Legend level, unlocking new techniques and Ghost Weapon abilities. The achievement 'The Ghost of Legend' is earned by reaching the maximum Legend rank.
- Ghost Weapon Techniques: Liberating territories helps you earn technique points needed to unlock all 6 Ghost Weapon techniques, including the Kunai, Black Powder Bomb, Sticky Bomb, Wind Chime, and the Firecracker (hidden under Wind Chimes). This is necessary for the 'Every Trick in the Book' achievement.
- Sword Upgrades: Liberating large Mongol territories is a primary source of Gold, essential for fully upgrading your sword to achieve the 'The Perfect Storm' achievement.
When approaching occupied areas, utilize stealth whenever possible to gain an advantage. Observe enemy patrols, use your grappling hook to reach vantage points, and employ Ghost Weapons to thin out enemy numbers before engaging directly. Clearing these areas is not only vital for the story but also for acquiring the resources and skills needed to become the Ghost of Tsushima.
