Mastering Stances in Ghost of Tsushima: The Key to Samurai Combat

Stances are the cornerstone of Jin Sakai's combat prowess in Ghost of Tsushima. Each stance is designed to counter specific enemy types, making it crucial to switch dynamically to exploit weaknesses and survive challenging encounters. Mastering these stances will transform you from a struggling samurai into a legendary warrior, capable of facing down hordes of Mongols and overcoming formidable foes.

There are four primary stances available to Jin throughout his journey, each with its own unique set of attacks and defensive capabilities. Understanding when and how to use each one is paramount to success. The game introduces these stances gradually, allowing you to learn and adapt as you progress through the story and explore the world.

The Four Primary Stances:

  • Stone Stance: Ideal for fighting shielded enemies. Its heavy, sweeping attacks can break through guards and stagger opponents. Stone Stance is unlocked early in the game and is essential for dealing with the heavily armored Mongol soldiers. Its primary attack is a powerful overhead swing, followed by a horizontal sweep.
  • Water Stance: Perfect for dueling one-on-one against unarmored enemies. Its rapid, fluid strikes can quickly overwhelm opponents and interrupt their attacks. Water Stance is excellent for dealing with faster, more agile enemies like ronin and some of the more nimble Mongol warriors. Its signature move is a series of quick, piercing thrusts.
  • Wind Stance: Designed for crowd control and fighting multiple enemies. Its wide, arcing attacks can hit several foes at once, keeping them at bay. Wind Stance is unlocked later in the game and becomes invaluable when you're surrounded. Its primary attack is a spinning slash that covers a wide area.
  • Moon Stance: The ultimate stance for dealing with spear-wielding enemies. Its devastating kicks and sweeps can break their guard and leave them vulnerable. Moon Stance is unlocked even later in the game and is a direct counter to the dangerous spear-wielding Mongol soldiers. Its signature move is a powerful, leaping kick.

Unlocking and Upgrading Stances:

New stances are unlocked by observing specific enemy types in combat. For example, to unlock Stone Stance, you must observe enemies using shields. To unlock Moon Stance, you must observe enemies wielding spears. Once unlocked, each stance can be further upgraded using Ghost Points, enhancing its damage, speed, and special abilities. Prioritizing upgrades for the stances you use most frequently is a wise strategy.

Combat Strategy:

The key to effective stance usage is adaptability. Pay attention to the enemy types you are facing. If you see a shield, switch to Stone Stance. If you're facing a lone, agile opponent, Water Stance is your best bet. When swarmed, Wind Stance will clear a path. And against spearmen, Moon Stance is your savior. Don't be afraid to experiment and find the rhythm that works best for you. Mastering stance switching is the difference between a swift victory and a swift defeat.
