Haiku
Haiku in Ghost of Tsushima are a meditative and artistic collectible that allows Jin Sakai to reflect on the beauty and turmoil of the island. Composing these short poems is a way for Jin to find solace amidst the chaos of war, and for players, it's a peaceful activity that rewards them with vanity items and a deeper appreciation for the game's serene landscapes.
Scattered throughout the Izuhara region, and indeed across the entire island of Tsushima, are numerous Haiku spots. These locations are easily identifiable by a distinctive blue pillar of smoke rising into the air, often situated in picturesque and tranquil settings such as mountaintops, serene forests, or overlooking scenic vistas. Approaching these spots will prompt Jin to interact with them.
Once Jin interacts with a Haiku spot, You is presented with a short, evocative scene. Jin will sit down, and You is then given a choice of three themes or emotions to focus on. These themes are usually related to the immediate surroundings or the current state of Tsushima. For example, a theme might be 'The Impermanence of Life,' 'The Beauty of Nature,' or 'The Scars of War.'
After selecting a theme, You is presented with three lines, each offering a choice of words or phrases. The goal is to select words that best capture the essence of the chosen theme and the visual inspiration of the location. Each line has a limited number of options, and You must choose one phrase for each line to complete the haiku. The game provides subtle hints or thematic connections to guide the player's choices.
Tips for composing Haiku:
- Observe Your Surroundings: Pay attention to the visual cues and the atmosphere of the Haiku spot. What elements stand out?
- Consider the Theme: Think about the chosen theme and how it relates to the landscape.
- Experiment with Phrases: Don't be afraid to try different combinations. There's no single 'correct' answer, but some combinations will feel more poetic than others.
- Look for Keywords: The game often highlights keywords in the theme and the phrase options that can help you make a connection.
Upon successfully composing a haiku, Jin will recite the poem, and You will be rewarded. The primary reward for completing a haiku is a new headband, which can be equipped to change Jin's appearance. These headbands are purely cosmetic and do not affect gameplay stats, but they allow for further customization of Jin's look.
Additionally, completing haiku contributes to Jin's overall progress and can help unlock certain achievements or trophies. It's a relaxing break from the intense combat and stealth, offering a moment of introspection and artistic expression within the game's narrative. The Izuhara region is rich with these opportunities, encouraging players to explore its diverse environments.
Haiku Composition Process:
- Locate a Haiku spot (marked by blue smoke).
- Interact with the spot to begin.
- Choose one of three thematic inspirations.
- Select one phrase for each of the three lines to complete the poem.
- Jin recites the haiku, and you receive a reward (usually a headband).
The haiku system is a beautiful addition that enriches the cultural immersion of Ghost of Tsushima, allowing players to engage with the game's world on a more personal and artistic level.
