Weapons

As Jin Sakai, you'll wield a diverse and deadly arsenal, blending the honorable samurai's blade with the cunning Ghost's tools. Mastering these weapons, understanding their unique strengths, and upgrading them strategically is crucial for liberating Tsushima from the Mongol invasion.

Katana: Sakai Storm

Jin's primary weapon, the Sakai Storm katana, is a symbol of his samurai heritage and his most reliable tool in direct combat. It's always equipped and cannot be swapped, but its effectiveness can be significantly enhanced through upgrades and Stances.

  • Primary Use: Melee combat, parrying, dodging, and executing powerful Stance-specific attacks.
  • Upgrades: The katana can be upgraded at Swordsmiths found in various settlements and survivor camps across Tsushima. These upgrades improve its damage output, making Jin more lethal against all enemy types. Each upgrade tier requires a combination of Supplies, Iron, Steel, and Gold.
  • Customization: While the katana's core stats are upgraded, its appearance can be customized with different Sword Kits. These are purely cosmetic and can be found as rewards for quests, exploration, or purchased from merchants.
  • Stances: As you progress and observe different enemy types, Jin will learn various combat Stances (Stone, Water, Wind, Moon, Ghost). Each Stance is highly effective against specific enemy archetypes (e.g., Stone Stance against Swordsmen, Water Stance against Shieldmen) and offers unique heavy attacks and special moves. Mastering Stance switching in combat is key to victory.

Tanto: The Ghost's Blade

The tanto is Jin's secondary blade, primarily used for stealth assassinations. It's a quick, silent, and deadly tool for eliminating enemies without alerting their comrades.

  • Primary Use: Stealth assassinations, chain assassinations, and critical strikes on downed enemies.
  • Upgrades: The tanto can be upgraded at the same Swordsmiths as the katana. Upgrades typically reduce the time it takes to perform assassinations or increase the number of enemies Jin can chain assassinate in quick succession. These upgrades require Supplies and various metals.
  • Customization: Like the katana, the tanto's appearance can be altered with different Sword Kits, offering cosmetic changes.

Bows: Ranged Precision

For engagements where direct confrontation isn't ideal or when dealing with distant threats, Jin relies on his bows. There are two distinct types, each with its own advantages and arrow types.

Half Bow

  • Acquisition: Jin starts with the Half Bow early in the game.
  • Primary Use: Quick shots, silent takedowns, and targeting weak points from medium range. It has a faster draw speed and reload time compared to the Long Bow.
  • Arrow Types:
    • Standard Arrows: Basic projectiles for silent kills and general damage.
    • Fire Arrows: Ignite enemies, causing damage over time and spreading panic. Excellent for groups or setting environmental hazards ablaze.
  • Upgrades: Available at Bowyers, upgrades improve draw speed, nocking speed, damage, and range. These require Supplies, Yew Wood, and Linen.

Long Bow

  • Acquisition: Obtained later in the story, typically during Act 1.
  • Primary Use: Long-range precision shots, high damage, and piercing through armor. Slower to draw but packs a significant punch. Ideal for taking out archers, heavy enemies, or targeting specific weak points from afar.
  • Arrow Types:
    • Heavy Arrows: Deal significantly more damage than standard arrows and can often stagger or knock down tougher enemies.
    • Explosive Arrows: Detonate on impact, dealing area-of-effect damage and capable of destroying structures or instantly killing groups of weaker enemies. Highly effective against armored foes and large groups.
  • Upgrades: Also available at Bowyers, upgrades enhance draw speed, damage, and range, requiring Supplies, Yew Wood, and Leather.

Ghost Weapons: Tools of Deception and Diversion

While not strictly "weapons" in the traditional sense, Jin's array of Ghost Weapons are indispensable for stealth, crowd control, and turning the tide of battle. These are acquired throughout the story and through exploration.

  • Kunai: Small throwing knives that can stagger multiple enemies, interrupting their attacks and opening them up for follow-up strikes. Upgrades increase the number of Kunai thrown and their damage.
  • Sticky Bomb: An explosive device that adheres to enemies or surfaces before detonating, dealing significant area damage. Excellent for clearing groups or heavily armored targets. Upgrades increase blast radius and damage.
  • Smoke Bomb: Creates a cloud of smoke, disorienting enemies and allowing Jin to escape, reposition, or perform stealth assassinations within the smoke. Upgrades increase duration and radius.
  • Wind Chime/Firecracker: Distraction tools used to lure enemies to a specific location, enabling stealth takedowns or bypassing patrols.
  • Black Powder Bomb: A more powerful explosive than the Sticky Bomb, dealing massive damage in a larger radius. Ideal for clearing large groups of enemies or breaking enemy formations.
  • Poison Dart: Fired from a blowgun, these darts silently incapacitate or kill enemies over time, causing them to collapse without alerting others. Upgrades can increase the potency or allow for multiple targets.

Weapon Customization and Charms

Beyond direct upgrades, Jin's weapons can be further customized and enhanced through the use of Charms. These powerful trinkets, earned from Shinto Shrines, quests, and exploration, can be equipped to Jin's armor to provide various passive bonuses that affect his weapon performance.

  • Examples of Weapon-Affecting Charms:
    • Charm of Blazing Flame: Increases the chance of igniting enemies with Fire Arrows.
    • Charm of Swift Strike: Increases melee attack speed.
    • Charm of Fortitude: Grants a chance to survive a lethal blow, allowing Jin to continue fighting.
    • Charm of Hidden Blades: Increases the number of Kunai Jin can throw.
    • Charm of Concentration: Extends the duration of Concentration (slow-motion aiming) when using bows.
  • Equipping Charms: Charms are equipped to specific slots on Jin's armor. Different armor sets may offer varying numbers of charm slots, encouraging players to mix and match for optimal builds.

Understanding and effectively using Jin's full arsenal, from the precise slice of his katana to the explosive power of a Sticky Bomb, is paramount to becoming the Ghost and reclaiming Tsushima.
