Safehouse Customization & Storage
While Grand Theft Auto IV doesn't offer the extensive interior customization seen in later titles, your safehouses are more than just save points. They provide crucial services for managing your arsenal, wardrobe, and even your vehicles. Understanding how to best utilize these features is key to Niko Bellic's survival and success in Liberty City.
Weapon Management & Resupply
Each of Niko's safehouses comes equipped with a weapon stash, allowing you to manage your firearms and explosives. This is invaluable for preparing for missions or simply re-arming after a particularly chaotic encounter.
- Automatic Resupply: After completing certain story missions, you'll find that your safehouse weapon stashes will automatically replenish a basic set of weapons. This typically includes a Pistol, Micro SMG, and some Grenades. This is a free way to keep a baseline arsenal.
- Purchased Weapons: Any weapons you purchase from Ammu-Nation or acquire during missions will be added to your safehouse inventory. You can switch between these weapons at any time by interacting with the weapon icon (a small gun symbol) inside your safehouse.
- Strategic Stockpiling: Before a difficult mission, visit your safehouse to ensure you have a full stock of your preferred weapons and ammunition. This saves you a trip to Ammu-Nation and keeps you ready for action.
Wardrobe & Outfit Changes
Niko's wardrobe is more than just cosmetic; certain outfits can influence interactions or simply reflect your current mood. All safehouses feature a wardrobe where you can change your clothes.
- Accessing the Wardrobe: Look for the clothes hanger icon within your safehouse. Interacting with this will bring up your available clothing options.
- Purchasing New Clothes: To expand your wardrobe, visit clothing stores across Liberty City. Notable options include:
- Russian Shop (Hove Beach, Broker): Offers more casual, Eastern European-style attire.
- Perseus (Port Tudor, Algonquin): Provides high-end, fashionable clothing.
- Modo (Northwood, Algonquin): Features a range of urban and trendy outfits.
- Mission-Specific Outfits: Some missions may require or suggest specific attire. Always check your wardrobe before starting a mission if you suspect a dress code is involved.
Vehicle Storage & Recovery
While Grand Theft Auto IV doesn't offer garages for every safehouse, your primary safehouses provide a crucial service for vehicle management: parking spaces and impound recovery.
Parking Spaces
Each of Niko's main safehouses (e.g., the apartment in Hove Beach, the apartment in Bohan, the apartment in Algonquin) has a designated parking spot directly outside. This is where you can reliably store a vehicle.
- How to Use: Simply park a vehicle in the marked parking space. The game will usually save this vehicle, ensuring it's there when you return.
- Limitations: Most safehouses only have space for one vehicle. If you park a second vehicle, the first one may despawn. Choose wisely which vehicle you wish to keep.
- Best Practice: Use these spots for rare vehicles you want to keep, or for your preferred getaway car before a mission.
Impound Lot Recovery
If your vehicle is abandoned, destroyed, or confiscated by the police, it might end up at the Impound Lot. This is your only option for recovering certain vehicles.
- Impound Lot Location: The main Impound Lot is located in Acter, Alderney, near the Algonquin Bridge. It's marked on your map with a car icon.
- Recovery Cost: Retrieving a vehicle from the Impound Lot typically costs a small fee (e.g., $100).
- When to Use: If you've lost a unique vehicle (like a mission reward car or a rare spawn) or simply want your favorite ride back, head to the Impound Lot. Be aware that not all vehicles will end up here; some are permanently lost.
Safehouse Locations & Progression
Niko acquires safehouses as he progresses through the story. Each new safehouse provides a new base of operations and access to the aforementioned features in a different part of Liberty City.
- Hove Beach Apartment (Broker): Your first safehouse, available from the beginning of the game.
- Bohan Apartment (Bohan): Acquired early in the storyline as you expand your operations.
- Playboy X's Penthouse (Northwood, Algonquin): Becomes available after a significant story decision. This is one of the most luxurious safehouses.
- Middle Park East Apartment (Algonquin): Another key safehouse in the heart of Algonquin, offering central access to the city.
