Safehouses
Safehouses in Vice City are more than just places to save your game; they are crucial hubs for resupplying, changing outfits, and storing vehicles. Understanding their locations and functionalities is key to efficient gameplay and survival in the treacherous streets of Vice City.
Key Safehouse Features
- Saving Your Game: Look for the spinning cassette tape icon inside a safehouse to save your progress. This is invaluable before attempting risky missions or after accumulating significant wealth.
- Garage: Most safehouses come equipped with a garage. This allows you to store up to two vehicles, protecting them from damage or despawning. This is especially useful for keeping rare or customized cars.
- Wardrobe: Change Tommy's outfit at any safehouse. New outfits become available as you progress through the story or complete specific side missions. Different outfits can sometimes help you blend in or avoid unwanted attention.
- Health and Armor Pickups: Some safehouses offer free health and armor pickups, which regenerate over time. Always check for these before heading out on a mission.
- Weapon Pickups: After completing certain missions or purchasing specific properties, some safehouses will provide free weapon pickups, such as the Colt .45 or Shotgun. These also regenerate.
Main Safehouses
Ocean View Hotel
Your very first safehouse, granted to you at the beginning of the game after the introductory cutscene. It's strategically located in Ocean Beach, offering immediate access to the eastern island.
- Location: Ocean Beach, just off the main coastal road.
- Features:
- Save Point (Cassette Tape)
- Wardrobe (Tommy's default Hawaiian Shirt outfit)
- Garage (holds 2 vehicles)
- Health Pickup (inside the room, regenerates)
- Colt .45 Pistol Pickup (becomes available after certain early missions, regenerates)
- Strategy: This safehouse is your initial base of operations. Always return here to save after completing missions or gathering money. The nearby streets often have readily available vehicles.
Vercetti Estate (Diaz's Mansion)
This opulent mansion becomes your primary safehouse later in the game, after you complete the mission "Rub Out" and eliminate Ricardo Diaz. It's a significant upgrade from the Ocean View Hotel.
- Location: Starfish Island, centrally located between the two main islands.
- Features:
- Save Point (Cassette Tape)
- Wardrobe (multiple outfits become available here, including the "Mr. Vercetti" suit)
- Large Garage (holds 2 vehicles, more spacious than Ocean View)
- Health Pickup (inside, regenerates)
- Armor Pickup (inside, regenerates)
- M4 Assault Rifle Pickup (becomes available after acquiring the estate, regenerates)
- Shotgun Pickup (becomes available after acquiring the estate, regenerates)
- Various vehicles often spawn in the driveway, including the Admiral and Sentinel.
- Strategy: The Vercetti Estate is your ultimate base. Utilize its central location for quick access to both islands. The free M4 and Shotgun are invaluable for preparing for tough missions. Always park your most prized vehicles in the garage here.

Utilizing Safehouses Effectively
Mastering the use of safehouses can significantly improve your gameplay experience:
- Pre-Mission Prep: Always visit a safehouse before a difficult mission. Save your game, change into an appropriate outfit if needed, and grab any free health, armor, or weapon pickups.
- Post-Mission Recovery: After a chaotic mission, head straight to a safehouse to save your progress, heal up, and repair any damaged vehicles in your garage.
- Vehicle Storage: If you find a rare vehicle (like a Voodoo, Cuban Hermes, or a specific gang car), drive it to a safehouse garage immediately to secure it.
- Wanted Level Management: While safehouses don't instantly remove a wanted level, saving your game and then reloading will clear it. This is a common tactic for escaping the police.
- Outfit Changes: Experiment with different outfits. Some missions might feel more thematic with a specific look, and certain outfits can even prevent gang members from recognizing you immediately.
