Water Purification Methods

In the unforgiving Amazon, clean water is paramount for survival. Dehydration is a constant threat, and drinking contaminated water leads to parasites and food poisoning, quickly draining your sanity and health. This section details all viable methods for purifying water, from basic boiling to advanced filtration, ensuring you stay hydrated and healthy.

Boiling Water (Early Game & Emergency)

Boiling is your most accessible and reliable early-game purification method. It kills most harmful bacteria and parasites, making even murky water safe to drink. The primary drawback is that it requires a heat source and a container.

  • Required Items:
    • Water Source: Any body of water (rivers, ponds, puddles, collected rainwater).
    • Container: A Coconut Bidon, Turtle Shell, or any crafted Pot.
    • Heat Source: A Campfire (Small or Large), a Stone Ring, or a Mud Mixer (for cooking).
    • Fuel: Small Sticks, Sticks, or Logs for your fire.
  • Strategy:
    1. Collect dirty water using your chosen container. Right-click the container in your inventory and select "Fill with Water" while near a water source.
    2. Place your container on a lit Campfire, Stone Ring, or Mud Mixer.
    3. Wait for the water to boil. You'll see steam rising and hear bubbling sounds. The water icon will change from dirty to clean.
    4. Once boiled, retrieve the container. The water is now safe to drink.
  • Tips: Always keep a filled Coconut Bidon or Turtle Shell of clean water on you. Boiling large quantities in a Pot at your base is efficient for sustained hydration.

Water Filter (Mid to Late Game)

The Water Filter is a crucial permanent structure that provides a consistent supply of clean water without constant boiling. It's an excellent investment for any established base.

  • Required Items (for crafting the Water Filter structure):
    • Long Stick: x3 (Found by chopping down small trees or breaking branches).
    • Rope: x2 (Crafted from Liana or found in abandoned camps).
    • Small Stone: x3 (Found on the ground, especially near rivers).
    • Charcoal: x3 (Obtained by burning wood in a Campfire until it turns to ash, then harvesting the charcoal).
  • Required Items (for filtration):
    • Water Source: Dirty water collected in a container (Coconut Bidon, Turtle Shell, Pot).
  • Strategy:
    1. Craft the Water Filter structure using the listed materials. Place it in a convenient location at your base.
    2. Approach the Water Filter with a container of dirty water.
    3. Interact with the filter to pour the dirty water in.
    4. Wait for the water to drip through. It will collect in the basin below as clean, drinkable water.
    5. Use an empty container to collect the purified water from the filter's basin.
  • Tips: Charcoal is consumed during the filtration process. Ensure you have a steady supply by regularly burning wood. A Water Filter can purify multiple uses before needing new charcoal, but keep an eye on its durability.

Rain Collector (Passive Water Collection)

The Rain Collector is a passive method for gathering clean water directly from rainfall. It's a low-maintenance solution for supplementing your water supply, especially during rainy seasons.

  • Required Items (for crafting the Rain Collector structure):
    • Long Stick: x4
    • Rope: x2
    • Banana Leaf: x4 (Harvested from Banana Trees).
  • Strategy:
    1. Craft the Rain Collector structure and place it outdoors at your base.
    2. During rainfall, the collector will automatically fill with clean water.
    3. Once it has collected water, you can use an empty container to scoop out the clean water.
  • Tips: Place multiple Rain Collectors around your base for maximum efficiency. While the water collected is clean, it's always a good idea to have a backup boiling or filtration method for dry spells.

Water Filter Bottle (Portable Filtration)

The Water Filter Bottle is an invaluable tool for expeditions, allowing you to purify dirty water on the go without needing a campfire or a stationary filter. This is a late-game item, usually found rather than crafted.

  • Required Items:
    • Water Filter Bottle: (Typically found in abandoned camps, tribal villages, or specific story locations like the Airport or Drug Lab).
    • Dirty Water Source: Any river, pond, or collected dirty water.
  • Strategy:
    1. Equip the Water Filter Bottle.
    2. Approach a dirty water source.
    3. Interact with the water source while holding the bottle to fill it. The bottle will automatically filter the water as it fills, providing clean water directly into the bottle.
  • Tips: The Water Filter Bottle has limited durability. Keep an eye on its condition and repair it with Duct Tape if necessary. It's an excellent item to carry for extended exploration.

Coconut Bidon & Turtle Shell (Water Storage)

While not purification methods themselves, these containers are essential for carrying and storing purified water. Always have at least one on you.

  • Coconut Bidon: Crafted from a Coconut (harvested from Coconut Palms) and a Rope. Holds a moderate amount of water.
  • Turtle Shell: Obtained by killing and harvesting a Turtle. Holds a significant amount of water, making it ideal for base storage or longer trips.
