Beginner Tips & Strategies

Learn key Half-Life 2 tips for beginners. Master the Gravity Gun for combat and puzzles, and conserve precious ammunition to survive City 17.

1. Master the Gravity Gun Early

The Gravity Gun (or Zero Point Energy Field Manipulator) is your most versatile tool. Don't just use it for puzzles; it's a powerful weapon. Pick up and launch objects at enemies, especially explosive barrels or sawblades. It conserves ammo and can be devastating against multiple foes.

2. Conserve Ammunition

Ammo can be scarce, especially on higher difficulties. Use your pistol for headshots on weaker enemies, and the Gravity Gun for environmental kills. Only use powerful weapons like the Shotgun or SMG when absolutely necessary or against tougher opponents.

3. Explore Thoroughly

Hidden caches of health, ammo, and suit power are often tucked away in corners, behind crates, or in seemingly inaccessible areas. Exploring pays off and can significantly improve your chances of survival.

4. use the Environment

Half-Life 2's physics engine is a core gameplay element. Use it to your advantage. Knock over shelves to create cover, push explosive barrels towards enemies, or use water to your benefit. Think creatively about how objects can be used.

5. Save Frequently

The game features an autosave system, but it's always wise to quicksave (F6 by default) before challenging encounters, difficult platforming sections, or after making significant progress. This prevents losing valuable progress.

6. Headshots are Key

For most humanoid enemies (Combine Soldiers, Zombies), a well-placed headshot will deal significantly more damage, often resulting in a one-hit kill with weaker weapons. Practice your aim!

7. Listen to Your Surroundings

Audio cues are vital. The distinctive sounds of Headcrabs, Zombies, or Combine patrols can alert you to danger before you see it. Pay attention to character dialogue for hints and objectives.
