Prologue: Hopalloo Island

Follow our walkthrough for Kao the Kangaroo's Prologue on Hopalloo Island. Learn how to defeat enemies, use special attacks, and progress through the opening sequence.

Alright, so you're about to jump into Kao the Kangaroo, and the very first thing you'll do is on Hopalloo Island. It's a bit of a dramatic start! You'll see a scene where Kaia, a female kangaroo, gets snatched by some dark force. Don't worry, Kao, our main guy, is right there trying to save her.

Once the cutscene wraps up, you'll get control of Kao. Just move forward, and bam! An enemy pops up. To take them down, just mash the Square / X (Xbox) / Y (Switch) button. It'll take about three hits to knock them out.

After you beat that first enemy, a bit of land will slide into place. Keep moving, and more enemies will appear. As you're wailing on them with your boxing gloves, keep an eye on the top left corner. See that meter filling up? That's your special meter! It charges up pretty fast if you keep landing punches. Once it's totally full, you'll see a button prompt pop up over an enemy's head. That's your signal to hit Triangle / Y (Xbox) / X (Switch) to unleash your special attack!

This special move has Kao leap into the air and then slam down, creating a shockwave. It's super useful when you're swarmed by enemies or facing one tough opponent. After you deal with the three enemies on the second 'island,' keep pushing forward and clear out any remaining foes. When you reach the barrier at the end, a cutscene will play, and then it's off to Hopalloo Island for another scene. You won't get to explore this first bit though, as the game immediately sends you to Walt's Dojo for some training.
