Food Production and Cooking
Sustaining your squad in the harsh world of Kenshi is paramount. While scavenging and purchasing food are viable early-game strategies, establishing your own food production chain is essential for long-term survival and base independence. This section will guide you through the intricacies of farming, animal husbandry, and cooking to keep your warriors well-fed and ready for anything.
I. Farming: The Foundation of Sustenance
Farming is the most reliable way to generate a consistent food supply. Different crops thrive in different biomes, so choose wisely based on your base's location.
- Researching Farming:
- To begin farming, you'll first need to research "Farming" at a Research Bench. This unlocks basic crop types and the ability to construct farms.
- Further research, such as "Hydroponics" (for indoor farming) and "Advanced Farming" (for higher yield crops), will become available as your base develops.
- Choosing Your Crops:
- Wheatstraw: A versatile crop, Wheatstraw grows well in most temperate and arid regions. It's the primary ingredient for Bread.
- Greenfruit: Thrives in humid and swampy areas. Greenfruit can be eaten raw or used in more complex recipes.
- Riceweed: Best suited for wetlands and swamps. Riceweed is crucial for producing Rice Bowls.
- Cactus: An excellent choice for arid and desert biomes, requiring minimal water. Cactus can be eaten raw or processed into Cactus Rum (though not a food item, it's a valuable trade good).
- Hemp: While not a food crop, Hemp is vital for producing Fabric and Medical Supplies, and can be grown in similar conditions to Wheatstraw.
- Farm Construction and Operation:
- Farm Plots: Construct "Farm Plot (Small)" or "Farm Plot (Large)" from the "Buildings" menu. Place them in an area with suitable soil fertility and water access.
- Water Source: Farms require water. You'll need a "Well" (Small or Large) to draw water, or a "Water Processor" if you're in a desert and need to convert dirty water. Assign a character to "Haul Water" to keep your farms irrigated.
- Fertilizer: While not strictly necessary for basic crops, fertilizer significantly boosts yield. Research "Fertilizer Production" to unlock the "Compost Bin," which converts organic waste into fertilizer.
- Farmers: Assign characters with high "Farming" skill to tend your farms. They will automatically plant, water, and harvest crops.
II. Animal Husbandry: Meat and More
Raising animals can provide a steady supply of meat, leather, and even eggs, diversifying your food sources.
- Researching Animal Husbandry:
- "Animal Farming" research is required to build animal enclosures and feed troughs.
- Acquiring Animals:
- Garru: Excellent pack animals, Garrus can also be butchered for meat and leather. They can be purchased from animal traders in major cities like The Hub or Squinn, or sometimes found as wild animals to be tamed (requires high "Animal Taming" skill).
- Bonedogs: While primarily combat companions, Bonedogs can also be butchered for meat in a pinch. They are often found in the wild or purchased from animal shops.
- Goats: Smaller than Garrus, Goats provide meat and leather. They are typically found in more temperate regions.
- Animal Management:
- Animal Feeder: Construct an "Animal Feeder" and keep it stocked with raw food (e.g., Wheatstraw, Greenfruit) for your animals.
- Butchering: When an animal is ready to be butchered, select it and choose the "Butcher" option. This requires a character with a "Laboring" skill.
III. Cooking: Turning Raw into Rations
Raw ingredients provide minimal sustenance. Cooking them into meals significantly increases their hunger-restoring value and often their shelf life.
- Researching Cooking:
- "Cooking" research is fundamental, unlocking the basic "Cooking Stove."
- "Advanced Cooking" will allow for more complex and efficient recipes.
- Cooking Stations:
- Cooking Stove: The primary cooking station. Requires fuel (Wood or Coal) to operate.
- Campfire: A portable, temporary cooking solution for basic recipes, useful when away from your base.
- Key Recipes and Ingredients:
- Bread: Made from 1x Wheatstraw. A staple food, easy to produce in large quantities.
- Meat Wrap: Made from 1x Raw Meat and 1x Wheatstraw. A more filling option than plain bread.
- Dustwich: Made from 1x Greenfruit and 1x Wheatstraw. A good option if you have an abundance of Greenfruit.
- Chewstick: Made from 1x Raw Meat. A simple way to process raw meat.
- Foodcube: Made from 1x Wheatstraw and 1x Greenfruit. A highly efficient, long-lasting food item, ideal for extended expeditions. Requires "Advanced Cooking" research.
- Cooks: Assign characters with high "Cooking" skill to your cooking stations. They will automatically process raw ingredients into meals. Ensure a steady supply of ingredients and fuel.
