Resistances & Protection
In Last Epoch, surviving Eterra's harsh environments and dangerous inhabitants hinges on robust defenses. Resistances and protection layers are paramount, mitigating incoming damage from elemental attacks, physical blows, and debilitating ailments. Understanding how to acquire and stack these defenses is crucial for progressing through the game's challenging content.
Navigating the world of Eterra requires a strong defensive foundation. Resistances and various forms of protection are not mere optional stats; they are essential for survival, especially as you delve into higher difficulties and endgame content like the Monolith of Fate and dungeons. Each enemy and boss deals specific types of damage, and having the right defenses can mean the difference between a swift victory and a frustrating defeat.
Elemental Resistances:
The primary form of defense against elemental damage comes from resistances. These include Fire, Cold, Lightning, Poison, and Void resistances. The cap for most resistances is 75%, which sificantly reduces the damage taken from that element. Acquiring these resistances is primarily done through gear affixes. Look for items with '+X% Fire Resistance', '+X% Lightning Resistance', and so on. Some blessings from the Monolith of Fate also offer substantial resistance bonuses.
Physical Protection:
Physical damage is mitigated through Armor and Block. Armor acts as a damage reduction stat against all physical attacks. The more armor you have, the less physical damage you'll take. Block chance, found on shields and some other gear, allows you to completely negate incoming physical damage on a successful block. Block effectiveness further reduces the damage taken if a block occurs.
Ailment Avoidance:
Beyond direct damage, ailments pose a sificant threat. Poison, Burn, Chill, and others can cripple your effectiveness. Ailment Avoidance is a stat that reduces the chance of enemies applying these ailments to you. Similar to resistances, this is primarily found on gear and through blessings. High Ailment Avoidance is crucial for encounters where enemies frequently apply debilitating effects.
Other Defensive Layers:
- Health: A larger health pool provides a buffer against all forms of damage.
- Ward: A temporary shield that regenerates when you don't take damage. Certain builds heavily rely on Ward for survival.
- Dodge Rating: Allows you to evade incoming attacks entirely.
- Endurance: Provides a flat damage reduction against all incoming damage once you reach a certain health threshold.
Dungeon-Specific Resistances:
Certain dungeons have elemental themes. For example, the Lightless Arbor focuses on Poison damage, making Poison Resistance a key stat for that specific dungeon. Always check the dungeon's theme and prepare accordingly.
