Defenses Explained — Last Epoch Guide
Understanding defenses in Last Epoch is crucial for survival, especially as you delve into endgame content. Unlike pure damage, robust defenses prevent you from being one-shot and allow for sustained combat. This guide breaks down the key defensive layers available to your character.
Last Epoch employs a layered defense system, meaning multiple mechanics work together to keep you alive. Relying on a single defensive stat is rarely sufficient. Instead, players must balance and stack various forms of mitigation to create a truly survivable character. This includes resistances, Armour, dodge, block, ward, and more.
Key Defensive Layers:
- Resistances: These are paramount. Elemental resistances (Fire, Cold, Lightning, Poison, Necrotic, Elemental) cap at 75% and sificantly reduce incoming damage of that type. Void resistance is also important for specific endgame content. Always aim to cap your resistances first.
- Armour: Reduces incoming physical damage. The more Armour you have, the greater the percentage reduction, but it's subject to diminishing returns. Armour is particularly effective against numerous small hits.
- Dodge: Grants a chance to completely avoid incoming attacks. Dodge rating provides a percentage chance to dodge. It's effective against both physical and spell damage but has a cap and can be less reliable against consistent, rapid attacks.
- Block: When using a shield or certain weapons, you can block incoming attacks. Block chance determines the chance to block, and Block Effectiveness determines how much damage is mitigated when a block occurs. Block is a powerful defensive layer, especially when combined with high Block Effectiveness.
- Ward: A temporary buffer of health that regenerates quickly when out of combat or under specific conditions. Ward is excellent for mitigating damage between encounters or for builds that can maintain high Ward uptime.
- Health: Your base health pool is the ultimate buffer. While not a mitigation stat, having a larger health pool allows you to survive hits that might bypass other defenses.
- Endurance: A percentage of all incoming physical damage is converted into 'Endurance Cost'. Having Endurance provides a flat damage reduction based on your maximum Endurance.
Synergy and Prioritization:
The most effective defensive characters stack multiple layers. For example, a character might have capped resistances, a good amount of Armour, a decent chance to dodge, and a reliable way to regenerate health or ward. The priority generally goes: Resistances > Armour/Ward/Dodge/Block (depending on build) > Health.
Pay close attention to the affixes on your gear, passive tree nodes, and skill specializations. These are the primary sources for increasing your defensive capabilities. Understanding how each layer interacts will allow you to build a character that can withstand the toughest challenges Eterra has to offer.
