Fishing Guide
Fishing in Kyo is a relaxing and rewarding activity that can net you valuable resources, money, and even contribute to your completion list. Whether you're looking for ingredients for your kitchen, items to sell, or just a peaceful break from the action, this guide will help you master the art of the catch.
Getting Started
To begin your fishing journey, you'll need a fishing rod and some bait. Luckily, these are readily available early in the game:
- Fishing Rod: You'll receive your first fishing rod, the Beginner's Rod, as part of a substory or early main story progression. Keep an eye out for opportunities to upgrade this later!
- Bait:
- Beginner's Bait: This basic bait is often given to you or can be purchased from various General Stores around Kyo, such as the one in Teramachi Street. It's good for attracting common fish.
- Quality Bait: For better catches and rarer fish, you'll want to invest in Quality Bait. This can also be purchased from General Stores, though it's pricier. It's highly recommended for specific fish types.
- Special Bait: Certain substories or achievements might reward you with special bait that attracts unique or legendary fish. Save these for when you're targeting something specific!
Fishing Locations
Kyo offers several prime fishing spots, each with its own unique selection of aquatic life:
- Kamo River (North): Located just north of the Shinsengumi Barracks, this spot is excellent for common river fish like Carp and Crucian Carp. It's a great place to practice your technique.
- Kamo River (South): Further south along the Kamo River, near the bridge leading to Fushimi, you'll find a slightly different variety, including larger Eels and occasionally Salmon.
- Fushimi Fishing Pier: This is your go-to spot for saltwater fish. Expect to find a wider array of species here, such as Sea Bream, Flounder, and even the elusive Tuna. This location often requires better bait for the more valuable catches.
The Fishing Mini-Game
Once you've selected a fishing spot and equipped your rod and bait, the mini-game begins:
- Casting Your Line: Press the indicated button (usually X/A) to cast your line. The longer you hold it, the further you'll cast. Aim for areas where you see fish shadows or ripples for a better chance.
- Waiting for a Bite: Watch your bobber. When a fish bites, it will dip significantly.
- Reeling It In: As soon as the bobber dips, quickly press the indicated button (again, usually X/A) to hook the fish.
- The Struggle: A tension bar will appear at the top of the screen. Your goal is to keep the white marker within the green zone of the bar.
- Reel (Hold X/A): Hold the button to reel in the fish. This will move the white marker towards the right.
- Release (Let go of X/A): Release the button to let the fish swim a bit. This will move the white marker towards the left.
- Avoid Red: If the white marker enters the red zones on either end, your line will snap, and the fish will get away.
- Success!: Keep the marker in the green zone until the fish's health bar (or stamina bar) is depleted, and you'll successfully reel in your catch!
Advanced Tips & Strategies
- Upgrade Your Rod: As you progress, look for opportunities to purchase or craft better fishing rods. The Sturdy Rod or Master's Rod will significantly increase your line strength and make catching larger fish much easier. Check the Blacksmith in Mukurogai for crafting options.
- Bait Matching: Different fish prefer different baits. If you're consistently catching small fish with Quality Bait, try switching back to Beginner's Bait, or vice-versa, depending on what you're targeting.
- Fish Shadows: Pay attention to the size of the fish shadows in the water. Larger shadows generally indicate larger, more valuable fish.
- Completion List: Many fish species are required for your Completion List. Keep track of what you've caught and consult the list to identify any missing species.
- Selling Your Catch: Most fish can be sold at any General Store for a decent profit, especially the rarer ones. This is a reliable way to earn Ryo early on.
- Cooking Ingredients: Many fish are essential ingredients for cooking at your villa in Another Life. Fresh fish can be used to prepare various dishes, which can restore health, provide temporary buffs, or be sold for profit.
With these tips, you'll be a master angler in no time, reeling in bountiful catches across Kyo!
