The Suicide Mission — Mass Effect 2 Walkthrough

The Suicide Mission is the climactic final act of Mass Effect 2, where Commander Shepard leads a team to repel a new threat to humanity. This mission is a point of no return, locking the game's sequence until completion. Success hinges on careful preparation, including crucial ship upgrades and strategic team assignments.

Mass Effect 2 is a 2010 third-person shooter RPG developed by BioWare. Players assume the role of Commander Shepard, the first human Spectre, two years after the events of the first Mass Effect. Shepard must assemble a team of the galaxy's finest to undertake a perilous mission against the Collectors.

Before initiating Act 3 by entering the Omega 4 Relay, upgrading your ship is paramount. The critical upgrades are the shields, armor, and cannon. These upgrades are provided by specific squad members:

  • Heavy Ship Armor: Jacob
  • Multicore Shielding: Tali
  • Thanix Cannon: Garrus

Failing to upgrade these components will result in the loss of team members during the mission. The order of preference for crew member deaths if an upgrade is missing is as follows:

Missing UpgradeCrew Member Death Order (if not upgraded)
Heavy Ship ArmorJack
Multicore ShieldingKasumi, Legion, Tali, Thane, Garrus, Zaeed, Grunt
Thanix CannonThane, Garrus, Zaeed, Grunt, Jack, Samara/Morinth

Squad members on the "Multicore Shielding" list will not die if they are in your party when you fight the Oculus. However, bringing Jack to fight the Oculus will not protect her if you do not have Heavy Ship Armor, nor will bringing anyone on the "Thanix Cannon" list save them from their fate if that upgrade is missing.

The Act 3 progression includes:

  1. The Normandy Attacked - Defend the Normandy from the Oculus.
  2. Collector Base: Infiltration - Help your tech specialist through the ventilation shaft.
  3. Collector Base: The Long Walk

After completing the "Await IFF Installation" mission, the mission sequence is locked. The game proceeds through to the Epilogue without allowing Shepard to use the Galaxy Map, complete assignments, or research upgrades. If Shepard survives the Suicide Mission, additional missions and assignments (DLC or those remaining from Acts 1 and 2) can then be completed.
