Controls (Detailed)
Mastering the controls in Metal Gear Solid: Portable Ops is crucial for effective infiltration and combat. This section breaks down every input, offering actionable strategies to maximize your efficiency in the field.
Movement and Stance
- Analog Nub: This is your primary movement control. Gently push for a slow walk, ideal for stealth. Push further to run. Remember, running generates more noise, increasing your chances of detection.
- D-Pad Up/Down: Adjust your stance.
- Up: Stand. Offers the best mobility but makes you most visible.
- Down (once): Crouch. Reduces your visibility and noise, making it easier to sneak past guards. Ideal for navigating open areas with cover.
- Down (twice): Prone. The lowest profile, offering maximum concealment. Essential for crawling through vents, under obstacles, or hiding in tall grass. Movement is slowest in this stance.
- D-Pad Left/Right: Strafe left or right. Use this for precise lateral movement while maintaining your facing, particularly useful when peeking around corners or adjusting aim.
Camera and View
- L Button: Centers the camera behind Snake (or your current operative). Tap this frequently to reorient yourself, especially after engaging in combat or navigating tight spaces.
- R Button: Activates First-Person View (FPV).
- Tap: Enter FPV. This is essential for precise aiming with firearms.
- Hold: While in FPV, the Analog Nub controls your aiming reticle.
- Tap again: Exit FPV.
Actions and Interactions
- X Button: Contextual Action Button. The function of this button changes based on your surroundings.
- Near a wall: Press to initiate Wall Hug. This is vital for stealth, allowing you to peek around corners by pressing the Analog Nub left or right.
- Near an enemy: Press to initiate CQC (Close Quarters Combat) if unarmed or holding a non-lethal weapon. This can be a throw, chokehold, or stun.
- Near an item: Pick up items like rations, ammo, or weapons.
- Near a door/ladder: Open doors or climb ladders.
- Over a downed enemy: Drag the body to a discreet location to prevent detection.
- Square Button: Fire/Attack.
- Tap: Fire your equipped weapon. In FPV, this is your primary attack.
- Hold (when unarmed or with certain weapons): Charge a CQC attack or a powerful melee strike.
- Triangle Button: Reload/Confirm.
- Tap: Reload your currently equipped firearm. Do this proactively during lulls in combat.
- In menus: Confirm selections.
- Circle Button: Knock/Cancel.
- Tap: Create a knocking sound. Use this to distract guards and lure them to your position, allowing you to flank or ambush them.
- In menus: Cancel selections or go back.
Equipment Management
- Select Button: Opens the Item Menu. From here, you can select items like Rations, Cardboard Boxes, or Grenades. Navigate with the D-Pad and confirm with Triangle.
- Start Button: Opens the Weapon Menu. Here you can switch between your primary and secondary firearms, as well as CQC-enabled weapons. Navigate with the D-Pad and confirm with Triangle.
Advanced Techniques
- "Peeking" from Cover: While wall-hugging (X button), use the Analog Nub to slowly move towards the edge of the cover. This allows you to observe enemy patrols without fully exposing yourself. Combine with FPV (R button) for precise target acquisition.
- CQC Throws: When performing CQC, experiment with different Analog Nub inputs immediately after initiating the grab (X button). Pushing forward, backward, left, or right can result in different throws, some of which are more effective for stunning or disarming.
- Dragging Bodies: After neutralizing an enemy, always drag their body to a hidden spot (e.g., behind crates, in a dark corner, or off a ledge). Leaving bodies in plain sight will trigger an alert.
- Using the Environment: Remember that many objects in the environment can be interacted with. For example, shooting out lights can create dark areas for stealth, and certain explosive barrels can be detonated to take out groups of enemies.
