Allies and Key Figures:

• Solid Snake: A member of FOX-HOUND, trained by McDonnel Miller. Operation Intrude N313 is his first mission, and his real name is unknown at this time.
• Big Boss: Commander-in-Chief of FOX-HOUND. A former member of Special Forces like Green Beret, SAS, and GSG9, he provides Solid Snake with tips on weapons and equipment via wireless communication.
• Grey Fox: Considered the leader of FOX-HOUND due to his physique and intelligence. He is the only one to receive the code name "Fox." Contact was lost after he infiltrated Outer Heaven.
• Diane: A member of the local resistance against Outer Heaven and former vocalist of the punk band Thin Wall. She uses her charm for intelligence gathering and knows about Outer Heaven's mercenaries and war machines.
• Jennifer: A member of the local resistance against Outer Heaven. She infiltrated Outer Heaven as medical staff to save her captured brother and provides physical support.
• Kyle Schneider: Former architecture engineer and current leader of the local resistance against Outer Heaven. Forced to help build Outer Heaven after his wife and children were killed, he knows much about its layout.
• Dr. Pettrovich Madnar: A brilliant scientist captured by Outer Heaven while seeking asylum in the United States. He was forced to develop weapons, with his daughter Ellen held hostage. He developed the TX-11 (Arnold) and TX-55 (Metal Gear).
• Ellen Pettrovich: Dr. Pettrovich's daughter and former Bolshoi Ballet star. Captured by Outer Heaven to blackmail her father into creating Metal Gear.

Boss Characters:

• Shoot Gunner: Former Spetsnaz member and master of riot guns, guarding a top-secret underground prison at Outer Heaven.
• Machine Gun Kid: A former member of the Special Air Service who prefers using machine guns.
• Hind D: A Russian gunship that stays grounded and fires rapid machine gun shots. It is weak against explosives.
• Tank: A standard military tank equipped with two side machine guns and a front missile launcher.
• Bulldozer: A slow-moving deathtrap that will run over anything in its path.
• Fire Trooper: A former member of Grenz Schutz Grouppe 9 (GSG9) who handles a flamethrower expertly.
• Arnolds: TX-11 twin cyberoids developed for Outer Heaven using Dr. Pettrovich's robo-technology; they are virtually indestructible.
• Coward Duck: A former leader of the extremist terrorist group Egg-Plant, who attacks with boomerangs while using hostages as a shield.
• Metal Gear: A TX-55 nuclear-equipped walking battle tank built by Dr. Pettrovich Madnar. It is not believed to be active yet but is planned for use by the terrorists.
• ?: The leader of Outer Heaven, whose identity is largely unknown except that he is the legendary mercenary who built Outer Heaven in the late 1980s.

Tips & Tricks:

Pause (F1) the game to enter the following codes on the first screen:

• DS 4: Improves your rank by one (not to exceed four stars).
• INTRUDER: Enter while your weapon is equipped (F2) to carry maximum ammunition for it.
• ISOLATION: Enter while rations are equipped (F3) to get maximum rations.
• ANTA WA ERAI: Japanese for "You're the Best." Use this passcode to get to the highest rank.
• HIRAKE GOMA: All-Access Pass code to get all keycards.

Item Regeneration Trick:

• To make an item reappear without leaving and re-entering a room, pause the game (F1), press F4, then press ESC, and finally un-pause (F1). The item will regenerate in the same position.
