Enemy Bestiary & Strategies
Welcome to the comprehensive enemy bestiary for Metroid: Zero Mission! Understanding your foes is crucial for survival on Planet Zebes. This section details common enemies, their behaviors, and the most effective ways to dispatch them, ensuring Samus Aran's mission is a success.
Common Enemies
Zoomer
- Location: Crateria, Brinstar, Norfair, Tourian
- Description: Small, crab-like creatures that cling to surfaces and move rapidly.
- Strategy:
- Early Game: A single Power Beam shot will destroy them.
- Advanced: Use a charged Power Beam shot for efficiency, or simply run past them if they pose no immediate threat. They drop small energy or missile refills occasionally.
Skree
- Location: Crateria, Brinstar, Norfair
- Description: Bat-like creatures that hang from ceilings, waiting for Samus to pass underneath before swooping down.
- Strategy:
- Anticipation: Listen for their distinct screech and watch for their shadows.
- Attack: A well-aimed Power Beam shot as they descend will take them out. If you're quick, you can often destroy them before they even reach the ground.
- Evasion: If you're low on health or in a hurry, simply dash past them as they begin their dive.
Mellow
- Location: Brinstar
- Description: Plant-like enemies that shoot slow-moving projectiles. They are typically stationary.
- Strategy:
- Prioritize: These can be annoying in tight corridors. Take them out from a distance before they can fire.
- Attack: One Power Beam shot is usually enough. If you have the Charge Beam, a charged shot will make short work of them and any projectiles they've fired.
- Defense: Their projectiles can be destroyed with your Power Beam.
Rio
- Location: Brinstar, Norfair
- Description: Flying creatures that move in predictable wave patterns.
- Strategy:
- Timing: Observe their flight path. They often move in a sine wave pattern.
- Attack: Shoot them at the peak or trough of their movement for an easy hit. A single Power Beam shot is sufficient.
- Morph Ball: In areas with low ceilings, you can often roll under them in Morph Ball form to avoid damage.
Geemer
- Location: Crateria, Brinstar, Norfair
- Description: Slow-moving, heavily armored creatures that cling to surfaces. They are immune to the Power Beam from the front.
- Strategy:
- Weak Point: Their underside is vulnerable. You'll need to hit them from below or behind.
- Morph Ball Bomb: The most effective method is to lay a Morph Ball Bomb directly underneath them. This will flip them over, exposing their weak point for a quick Power Beam shot, or simply destroy them if the bomb hits directly.
- Charged Shot: A fully charged Power Beam shot can sometimes penetrate their armor, but it's less reliable than a bomb.
Sidehopper
- Location: Crateria, Brinstar, Norfair
- Description: Large, ape-like creatures that jump around erratically.
- Strategy:
- Movement: Their unpredictable jumps can make them hard to hit. Try to anticipate their landing spot.
- Attack: Multiple Power Beam shots or a single charged shot will defeat them. Missiles are also highly effective and recommended if you're struggling.
- Space Jump: Once you acquire the Space Jump, you can often jump over them and shoot down, making them much easier to deal with.
Zebesian (Space Pirate)
- Location: Tourian, Chozodia (Zero Suit segment)
- Description: The iconic Space Pirates, these enemies come in various forms (green, purple, red) with different resistances and attacks.
- Strategy (Armored Samus):
- Green Zebesian: Basic variant. Two Power Beam shots or one charged shot.
- Purple Zebesian: More resilient. Requires more Power Beam shots. Missiles are very effective. They often carry shields.
- Red Zebesian: Heavily armored and often carry plasma rifles. These are tough. Use multiple Missiles or Super Missiles. Freeze them with the Ice Beam if you have it, then shatter them with a Missile.
- Melee: If they get close, they can swipe at Samus. Keep your distance.
- Strategy (Zero Suit Samus):
- Stealth: During the Zero Suit segment, direct confrontation is almost always fatal. Avoid detection at all costs.
- Stun Gun: Your only weapon is a low-power stun gun. It can temporarily incapacitate a Zebesian, allowing you to run past or climb. It's not for defeating them.
- Environmental Hazards: Use the environment to your advantage (e.g., hiding in vents, using narrow passages).
Specialized Threats
Metroid
- Location: Tourian
- Description: The titular parasitic creatures, immune to most conventional weapons.
- Strategy:
- Ice Beam: The only way to defeat a Metroid is to freeze it with the Ice Beam.
- Missile: Once frozen, immediately hit it with a Missile to shatter it. If you don't hit it quickly enough, it will thaw and resume its attack.
- Avoidance: If you don't have the Ice Beam, avoid Tourian entirely until you acquire it. They will drain your energy rapidly if they latch onto you.
Mother Brain's Rinkas
- Location: Tourian (Mother Brain's chamber)
- Description: Small, fiery rings that are continuously spawned by the Rinka Generator.
- Strategy:
- Prioritize Generator: Do not waste missiles on individual Rinkas. Focus all your firepower on the Rinka Generator, located on the ceiling.
- Missiles: The Rinka Generator requires multiple Missiles to destroy. Once it's gone, the Rinkas will stop spawning.
- Evasion: While attacking the generator, continuously move and jump to avoid the Rinkas. They deal significant damage.
Mastering these strategies will significantly improve your journey through Metroid: Zero Mission. Good luck, Samus!
