Enemy Weaknesses & Resistances
Understanding the strengths and weaknesses of Zebes's indigenous and engineered lifeforms is crucial for efficient combat and resource management. While your Power Beam is a reliable default, utilizing specific upgrades can turn a tough encounter into a trivial one. This section details common enemy vulnerabilities and resistances, along with recommended strategies.
General Weaknesses
- Missiles: Almost every enemy in Metroid: Zero Mission takes significantly more damage from Missiles than from the Power Beam. This is your go-to for quickly dispatching tougher regular enemies and all bosses. Always prioritize collecting Missile Tanks to maximize your destructive potential.
- Charge Beam: A fully charged Power Beam shot deals more damage and can often pierce through multiple weaker enemies. It's excellent for conserving Missiles on mid-tier threats.
- Bomb: Bombs are primarily used for destroying Bomb Blocks and navigating tight spaces, but they are also effective against ground-based enemies, especially those that are slow or stationary. They can also reveal hidden passages and items.
- Screw Attack: Once acquired, the Screw Attack makes Samus invincible and deals massive damage to almost all enemies upon contact. It's an ultimate offensive and defensive tool, especially effective when traversing areas dense with flying or fast-moving enemies.
Specific Enemy Strategies
Zebesian Fauna (Surface & Crateria)
- Zoomer: These crawling creatures are easily dispatched with a single Power Beam shot. They are resistant to Bombs if not directly hit.
- Geemer: Similar to Zoomers, but often cling to ceilings. A single Power Beam shot suffices.
- Mellow: These small, flying creatures are a nuisance. A single Power Beam shot will take them down. They are highly susceptible to the Screw Attack.
- Ripper: Rippers are invulnerable to your Power Beam from the front.
- Weakness: Missiles will destroy them in one hit. Alternatively, a well-placed Bomb from below can flip them over, exposing their vulnerable underside to Power Beam shots. The Screw Attack also bypasses their frontal armor.
- Sidehopper: These hopping creatures are best dealt with by firing upwards as they jump. Two Power Beam shots or one Missile will defeat them.
Norfair & Kraid's Lair Denizens
- Lava Beast: These creatures emerge from lava.
- Weakness: They are highly vulnerable to Missiles (1-2 hits). A charged Power Beam shot is also effective. Standard Power Beam shots take several hits.
- Skree: These ceiling-dwelling creatures drop when Samus passes underneath.
- Weakness: A single Power Beam shot as they descend is usually enough. They are also easily destroyed by the Screw Attack.
- Dragon: Large, fire-breathing creatures found in Norfair.
- Weakness: Their head is their weak point. Aim for it with Missiles (2-3 hits) or repeated charged Power Beam shots.
Brinstar & Tourian Organisms
- Metroid: These iconic creatures are invulnerable to all conventional weapons except for one specific item.
- Weakness: The only way to defeat a Metroid is with a Freeze Beam shot followed by a Missile. The Freeze Beam temporarily immobilizes them, allowing you to land a critical Missile hit. Without the Freeze Beam, they are effectively invincible.
- Zebesian: The iconic space pirates.
- Weakness: They are generally susceptible to 2-3 Power Beam shots or a single Missile. The Screw Attack makes short work of them.
Resistances & Immunities
- Armored Enemies: Many enemies, like the Ripper, possess armored exteriors that deflect standard Power Beam shots. Always look for exposed areas, use Missiles, or employ the Screw Attack.
- Environmental Hazards: Lava and acid pools are instant death or cause rapid damage. Your suit offers no resistance to these.
- Bosses: All bosses are highly resistant to the standard Power Beam. Missiles are almost always the primary damage dealer. Refer to the "Boss Strategies" section for detailed tactics.
Remember, conserving Missiles for critical encounters is often a wise strategy, especially early in the game. However, don't hesitate to use them if you're struggling with a particular enemy or need to clear a path quickly.
