Completing Metroid: Zero Mission isn't just about saving the galaxy; it's also about unlocking a wealth of bonus content that adds significant replay value and challenges. Unlockable Difficulties
Upon finishing the game for the first time, you'll gain access to new difficulty settings, allowing you to re-experience Zebes with increased challenge.
- Hard Mode: Unlocked after completing the game on Normal difficulty. In Hard Mode, enemies deal more damage, Samus takes more damage, and health/missile drops are less frequent. This mode is essential for achieving the best ending pictures.
- Unlock Strategy: Simply complete the game on any difficulty. There are no specific time or item requirements for this unlock.
Image Gallery
The Image Gallery is where you can view various artwork and character profiles. More images become available as you meet certain criteria during your playthroughs.
- Ending Pictures: These are the most sought-after unlocks. There are multiple ending pictures, each depicting Samus in different attire or poses, and they are tied directly to your completion time and item collection percentage on specific difficulties.
- Best Ending (Zero Suit Samus): To unlock the iconic Zero Suit Samus ending, you typically need to complete the game on Hard Mode with a very fast time (under 2 hours) and a high item collection rate (90-100%). This requires mastery of movement, boss strategies, and efficient item routing.
- Other Endings: Various other endings are unlocked by completing the game on different difficulties (Normal, Hard) with varying completion times and item percentages. Experiment with different playstyles to see them all!
- Character Profiles: These provide background information and artwork for key characters like Samus Aran, Ridley, Kraid, Mother Brain, and the Chozo. They are generally unlocked by defeating the respective bosses or simply by completing the game.
- Unlock Strategy: Replay the game multiple times, focusing on improving your speed and item collection. A good target for a "perfect" run would be under 2 hours with 100% item collection on Hard Mode.
Metroid (NES)
One of the most exciting post-game unlocks is the ability to play the original Famicom Disk System / NES game, Metroid, directly from the Zero Mission menu!
- How to Unlock: Complete Metroid: Zero Mission once on any difficulty. After the credits roll and you save your game, return to the main menu. You will find a new option, "Original Metroid," available.
- Experience the Classic: This is a faithful emulation of the 1986 classic, allowing you to see where Samus's journey began. Be warned, the original Metroid is significantly less forgiving than Zero Mission!
Fusion Gallery (Requires Link Cable)
For those with a Game Boy Advance Link Cable and a copy of Metroid Fusion, there's an additional unlockable gallery.
- How to Unlock: Connect two Game Boy Advance systems with a Link Cable. Insert Metroid: Zero Mission into one GBA and Metroid Fusion into the other. Start Zero Mission, and from the main menu, select the "Link" option. Follow the on-screen prompts to establish a connection.
- Content: This gallery contains exclusive artwork and information related to Metroid Fusion, providing a nice bridge between the two GBA titles.
- Note: This unlock is purely cosmetic and does not affect gameplay in either title.
