Enemy Attack Patterns

Understand enemy attack patterns on Zebes in Metroid. Learn to counter threats like the Zoomer to conserve energy and missiles during your mission.

Enemy Attack Patterns

Understanding the predictable behaviors of Zebes's indigenous and engineered threats is paramount to Samus Aran's survival. This section details the common attack patterns of frequently encountered enemies, offering actionable strategies to conserve energy and missiles.

Surface of Zebes (Crateria/Brinstar Transition)

  • Zoomer: These small, red, crab-like creatures are often the first enemies you'll encounter.
    • Attack Pattern: Zoomers cling to walls and ceilings, moving in a set path. They will drop off ledges if their path ends, or if Samus is directly beneath them. They deal minimal contact damage.
    • Strategy: A single shot from your standard Power Beam will dispatch them. If you have the Morph Ball acquired from the Crateria Power-Up Room (located directly below the starting area), you can roll under them to avoid damage entirely.
  • Skree: Bat-like creatures found in various caverns.
    • Attack Pattern: Skrees hang dormant from ceilings. When Samus passes underneath, they detach and dive straight down towards her position. They are invulnerable during their descent until they hit the ground or a wall.
    • Strategy: The key is anticipation. As you approach a Skree, pause briefly. Once it drops, move out of its path and then fire. A single Power Beam shot will destroy it once it's vulnerable.

Brinstar Caverns

  • Rio: Flying insectoids that are a common nuisance.
    • Attack Pattern: Rios fly in a distinctive wave-like or figure-eight pattern. They do not actively pursue Samus but will inflict contact damage if she intersects their flight path.
    • Strategy: Observe their pattern and time your shots. A well-aimed Power Beam shot will take them down. If you've acquired the Long Beam from the Brinstar Long Beam Chamber (accessible early on by dropping through the floor near the first elevator), you'll find it much easier to hit them from a distance.
  • Mellow: Stationary plant-like enemies.
    • Attack Pattern: Mellows remain rooted to the ground or ceiling and periodically spit slow-moving projectiles in a straight line towards Samus's general direction.
    • Strategy: These are easily dealt with. Approach cautiously, fire a few Power Beam shots, and then move to avoid their projectile. They have low health.

Norfair Depths

  • Kraid's Lair Creatures (Geega, Sidehopper): As you delve deeper into Norfair, enemies become more aggressive.
    • Geega: Large, green, hopping creatures.
      • Attack Pattern: Geegas move by making large, arcing hops. They will attempt to land on Samus or in her immediate vicinity.
      • Strategy: Use the Screw Attack (if acquired from the Norfair Screw Attack Chamber after defeating Kraid) to effortlessly destroy them. Otherwise, time your Power Beam shots between their hops. The Ice Beam (found in Norfair's Ice Beam Chamber) can freeze them, allowing you to bypass or destroy them with a missile.
    • Sidehopper: Small, red, agile creatures.
      • Attack Pattern: Sidehoppers move quickly in short, sharp hops, often changing direction abruptly. They are difficult to hit due to their erratic movement.
      • Strategy: The Wave Beam (located in Norfair's Wave Beam Chamber, often requiring the High Jump Boots from Brinstar) is highly effective here, as its wide shot can hit them even if your aim isn't perfect. Otherwise, try to anticipate their next hop and fire.

Remember, careful observation and understanding these patterns will significantly reduce the damage you take and the resources you expend, making your journey through Zebes much smoother.
