This section will serve as your invaluable map, detailing every crucial path, hidden item, and strategic encounter you'll face in your mission to defeat the Space Pirates and Mother Brain. While the original Metroid doesn't provide an in-game map, this guide will effectively fill that void, ensuring you never get lost in the alien depths.

Brinstar: The Verdant Depths

Your journey begins in the lush, green caverns of Brinstar. This area serves as your initial training ground, introducing you to basic movement, combat, and environmental puzzles.

  • Starting Point: You'll land in a small chamber. Head right.
  • First Power-Up: Immediately to your right, you'll find your first Missile Tank. Collect it to increase your missile capacity.
  • Morph Ball Acquisition: Continue right, navigating through a few screens. You'll encounter a statue holding the Morph Ball. This essential ability allows Samus to roll into a small ball, accessing narrow passages.
  • Bomb Location: After acquiring the Morph Ball, drop down a shaft. To your left, you'll find the Bomb upgrade. Use it to destroy certain blocks and reveal hidden paths.
  • Energy Tank (Brinstar 1): From the Bomb location, head left and down. You'll find a hidden passage accessible only by Morph Ball. Bomb the floor to reveal a path to an Energy Tank, significantly increasing your maximum health.
  • Route to Norfair: Progress downwards and to the right from the Morph Ball statue. You'll eventually find a long vertical shaft leading to the fiery realm of Norfair.

Norfair: The Volcanic Core

Norfair is a scorching hot region characterized by its lava pits and tougher enemies. The heat itself can damage Samus without the proper suit upgrade.

  • Varia Suit: This is your primary objective in Norfair. From the entrance, navigate through the initial lava-filled rooms. The Varia Suit is located deep within Norfair, often protected by a series of challenging enemy encounters and tricky jumps over lava. This suit halves all damage taken and negates environmental heat damage.
  • Screw Attack: After obtaining the Varia Suit, explore the upper sections of Norfair. The Screw Attack, a powerful spinning jump that destroys most enemies on contact, is hidden behind a series of bombable blocks and often requires precise platforming.
  • High Jump Boots: These boots are crucial for reaching higher platforms and are typically found in a vertical shaft in the mid-section of Norfair. Bomb the ceiling or walls to reveal the path.
  • Ice Beam: A vital weapon upgrade, the Ice Beam is located in the deeper, more complex areas of Norfair. It allows you to freeze enemies, turning them into temporary platforms. This is essential for reaching certain areas and defeating specific bosses.
  • Route to Kraid's Lair: From the main Norfair area, look for a hidden passage leading downwards and to the left. This path will eventually open up to the entrance of Kraid's domain.

Kraid's Lair: The Beast's Domain

Kraid's Lair is a mini-dungeon within Zebes, home to the formidable Space Pirate general, Kraid. This area is characterized by its unique green-hued blocks and challenging enemy placement.

  • Entering Kraid's Lair: You'll need to use the Morph Ball to access a narrow tunnel from Norfair.
  • Kraid's Hideout: Navigate through the winding passages. You'll encounter new enemy types unique to this area. Kraid himself is located in a large chamber at the end of the lair.
  • Boss Strategy (Kraid): Kraid is a large, stationary boss. His weak point is his head. Fire missiles and charged shots at his head while dodging his projectiles. The Ice Beam can temporarily freeze him, giving you a window for attack.
  • Reward: Defeating Kraid opens a path to the right, leading to a new section of Zebes.

Tourian: The Final Gauntlet

Tourian is the final, heavily fortified area of Zebes, leading directly to Mother Brain. This area is teeming with Metroids, which are immune to all weapons except the Ice Beam.

  • Metroid Encounters: Be prepared for constant Metroid attacks. Freeze them with the Ice Beam, then finish them off with missiles.
  • Mother Brain's Chamber: Navigate through the Metroid-infested corridors. You'll eventually reach a long, vertical shaft leading to Mother Brain's lair.
  • Boss Strategy (Mother Brain): Mother Brain is protected by a series of Rinkas and a barrier. Destroy the Rinkas, then the barrier, and finally unleash all your missiles and charged shots on Mother Brain's eye. Be wary of the lava rising and falling in the chamber.
  • Escape Sequence: After defeating Mother Brain, a self-destruct sequence will initiate. You'll have a limited time to escape Zebes. Follow the path back through Tourian and out to your ship.

Crateria: The Surface

Crateria is the surface of Zebes, where your ship is docked. You'll only spend a brief amount of time here at the beginning and end of your mission.

  • Landing Site: Your ship is located here.
  • Escape Route: After defeating Mother Brain, you will automatically be directed back to Crateria for your escape.

Remember to constantly explore and bomb suspicious blocks. Many hidden Missile Tanks and Energy Tanks are scattered throughout Zebes, crucial for your survival. Good luck, Samus!
