Path to Kraid
Kraid, one of the Space Pirates' most formidable generals, awaits deep within the fiery depths of his lair. Reaching him requires careful navigation through a specific, often overlooked, red door in Brinstar. This section will guide you meticulously from the familiar corridors of Brinstar into Kraid's treacherous domain, detailing every step, enemy, and essential item along the way.
Locating the Entrance to Kraid's Lair in Brinstar
Unlike Ridley's more straightforward entrance, Kraid's initial access point can be a bit elusive. Your journey begins in the central Brinstar area, specifically near the long vertical shaft that connects to Tourian (the final area). If you've just defeated Mother Brain for the first time, you've gone too far!
- From the Brinstar Elevator (from Crateria): Descend the first long vertical shaft. At the bottom, head right through the first door.
- Navigating the First Horizontal Corridor: You'll enter a room with several platforms and enemies like Zoomers and Skrees. Continue heading right, passing through two more doors.
- The Vertical Shaft with the Power Bomb Expansion: You will arrive at a tall vertical shaft. If you haven't already, this shaft contains a hidden Power Bomb Expansion behind a destructible block on the right wall, near the top. Descend this shaft to the very bottom.
- Finding the Red Door: At the bottom of this vertical shaft, head left. You will immediately encounter a red door. This is your gateway to Kraid's domain.
Common Pitfall: Many players mistakenly continue right from the bottom of the Power Bomb shaft, leading them further into Brinstar's lower sections, away from Kraid. Always remember to head LEFT at the bottom of that specific shaft to find the red door.
Journey Through Kraid's Domain
Once you pass through that red door, the environment will subtly shift, transitioning from Brinstar's familiar orange and brown palette to the distinct green and grey of Kraid's Lair. Be prepared for new enemy types and environmental hazards.
Key Areas and Navigation:
Kraid's Lair is a sprawling, multi-layered complex. Expect to navigate numerous vertical shafts, horizontal corridors, and hidden passages. Bombing suspicious blocks is paramount to uncovering the full path and all hidden items.
- Initial Vertical Descent (Room 1):
- Upon entering the red door, you'll find yourself in a long, winding vertical shaft.
- Immediately drop down. You'll encounter Rippers flying in predictable patterns. While immune to your beam, they can be destroyed with missiles if they are directly blocking your path. Conserve missiles if possible.
- Look for false floors. Many sections require you to stand on a block and drop through, or bomb a block to reveal the path below.
- Item Alert: There is often a hidden Missile Expansion early in this descent. Look for a single block that seems out of place on a wall or floor.
- Continue descending until you reach the bottom.
- First Horizontal Corridor (Room 2):
- At the bottom of the initial shaft, head right. You'll enter a horizontal corridor.
- This area often features Zebbos (ground-dwelling hoppers) and Sidehoppers (wall/ceiling crawlers). Both are easily dispatched with your beam.
- Bomb every suspicious block on the floor and walls. This area is notorious for hidden passages.
- Pathfinding: You will likely need to bomb a section of the floor to drop into another vertical shaft or a lower horizontal path.
- Mid-Lair Vertical Shaft (Room 3):
- After navigating the first horizontal corridor, you'll drop into another significant vertical shaft.
- This shaft often has multiple branching paths. Explore thoroughly!
- Item Alert: This shaft is a common location for an Energy Tank. Look for a hidden passage on one of the walls, usually requiring a bomb to open. It might lead to a small, enclosed room containing the tank.
- Continue descending or take a horizontal path that leads further into the lair.
- Maze-like Horizontal Sections (Rooms 4-6):
- Kraid's Lair features several interconnected horizontal corridors that can feel like a maze.
- Bomb Everything: Seriously. If you hit a dead end, bomb the walls, floor, and ceiling. Many paths are concealed. Look for discolored blocks or areas that seem unusually empty.
- Enemy Density: Expect increased numbers of Rippers, Zebbos, and Sidehoppers.
- Item Alert: This is where you'll find the majority of the remaining Missile Expansions. They are often hidden behind bombable blocks in walls or under false floors in small alcoves.
- Path to Kraid's Chamber: One of these horizontal sections will eventually lead to a long, straight corridor that serves as the final approach to Kraid.
- Pre-Kraid Chamber (Room 7):
- This is typically a large, open chamber, often with a few enemies, located directly before Kraid's boss room.
- Last Chance: This room is your final opportunity to replenish energy by farming enemies if needed. Take a moment to ensure your missile count is high and your energy tanks are full.
- Item Alert: Sometimes, a final Energy Tank or Missile Expansion is hidden in this area, usually requiring a bomb to reveal a secret room.
- Once prepared, proceed through the door on the right (or sometimes left, depending on the specific layout) to face Kraid.
Recommended Loadout and Preparation for Kraid
Before you enter Kraid's chamber, ensure you are adequately equipped. Kraid is a formidable opponent, especially if you're under-prepared. Your preparedness directly correlates to your chances of survival.
Essential Items & Abilities:
- Morph Ball: Absolutely essential for navigating tight passages, dropping bombs, and dodging Kraid's attacks.
- Bombs: Crucial for revealing hidden paths, items, and dealing minor damage to Kraid's projectiles.
- Missiles: Your primary and most effective weapon against Kraid. Without a substantial supply, victory is nearly impossible.
- Energy Tanks: Aim for at least 3-4 Energy Tanks. More is always better. Each tank provides an additional 100 units of energy.
- Varia Suit: (Highly Recommended, but not mandatory for NES) While not strictly mandatory for the path to Kraid, having the Varia Suit (found in Norfair) significantly reduces damage taken from Kraid's attacks and the general heat of his lair. It makes the fight considerably easier. If you haven't acquired it yet, consider a detour to Norfair.
- Screw Attack: (Optional, but helpful for clearing enemies) If you've managed to acquire this powerful ability, it will make navigating Kraid's Lair much faster by instantly destroying most common enemies. However, it's not necessary for the Kraid fight itself.
Missile Count Recommendation:
This is a critical point for Kraid. The number of missiles you need can vary slightly between versions due to hit detection and enemy behavior nuances, but a general guideline applies:
- NES Version: We strongly recommend having a minimum of 75-100 missiles. Kraid's hitboxes can be finicky, and you'll want a generous supply to ensure victory. A comfortable buffer is always advised.
- Game Boy Advance (GBA) Version (Metroid: Zero Mission): While Zero Mission features a reimagined Kraid with different mechanics, the original NES Kraid is the focus here. For the original NES game, stick to the 75-100 missile recommendation. If you are playing a fan-made GBA port of the original Metroid, assume the NES missile count.
Why so many missiles? Kraid requires multiple missile hits to his open mouth to take damage. His attacks can be relentless, and you'll often miss shots or take damage, requiring you to retreat and try again. A higher missile count provides a comfortable buffer and reduces frustration.
Final Approach to Kraid
As you get closer to Kraid's chamber, the environment will become more oppressive, often featuring lava pits and more aggressive enemies. The room directly preceding Kraid's lair is usually a large, open chamber. This is your last chance to collect any remaining missile expansions or energy before the boss fight. If you are low on health, consider grinding weaker enemies in a previous room for energy drops before proceeding.
Once you are fully prepared, proceed through the final door. Kraid awaits!
