The 14 Weapon Types

Monster Hunter Rise features a diverse arsenal of 14 distinct weapon types, each with its own set of attacks, combos, and special Silkbind Attacks. Understanding these differences is the first step to becoming a proficient hunter.

  • Great Sword: Slow, powerful swings with devastating charged attacks. Focuses on landing critical hits after precise dodges.
  • Long Sword: Fluid combos and counter-attacks. Its Spirit Gauge management is key to unleashing powerful Spirit Blade attacks.
  • Sword & Shield: Versatile and balanced, allowing for quick attacks, defensive blocks, and item usage mid-combo.
  • Dual Blades: Rapid, relentless attacks. Requires careful stamina management but offers incredible damage output.
  • Hammer: Blunt weapon focused on stunning monsters with powerful, well-aimed blows to the head.
  • Hunting Horn: Supports the team with buffs through musical melodies while still dealing decent damage.
  • Lance: Defensive powerhouse with a strong guard and a relentless charge attack.
  • Gunlance: Combines sword-like attacks with explosive shelling. Offers both physical and elemental damage.
  • Switch Axe: Transforms between an axe and a sword mode, each with different attack styles and the powerful Amped Elemental Discharge.
  • Insect Glaive: Aerial combat specialist, allowing for extended airtime and mounting opportunities. Uses Kinsects to gather buffs.
  • Light Bowgun: Mobile ranged weapon with rapid-fire capabilities and various ammo types.
  • Heavy Bowgun: Slower but more powerful ranged weapon, capable of dealing massive damage with special ammo like Wyvernheart and Wyvernsnipe.
  • Bow: Ranged weapon focused on mobility and charged shots. Requires precise aiming and stamina management.
  • Charge Blade: Complex weapon with two modes: Sword & Shield for charging phials, and Axe for unleashing devastating phial-powered attacks.

Silkbind Attacks

Each weapon type gains unique Silkbind Attacks, activated using Wirebugs. These attacks offer new offensive and defensive options, often defining a weapon's modern playstyle. For example, the Long Sword's 'Serene Pose' allows for a powerful counter, while the Great Sword's 'Adamant Charged Slash' offers a safer way to charge.

Core Mechanics and Combos

Beyond basic attacks, each weapon has specific combo chains and mechanics to master. The Hammer requires understanding KO buildup, the Hunting Horn needs melody management, and the Charge Blade demands careful phial charging and management. Learning these intricacies is crucial for maximizing damage and effectiveness.

Beginner-Friendly Weapons

For new hunters, weapons like the Sword & Shield, Long Sword, and Hammer are often recommended due to their relatively straightforward mechanics and good all-around performance. However, the best weapon is ultimately the one you enjoy playing the most.

Advanced Techniques

As you progress, you'll discover advanced techniques, such as specific Silkbind Attack setups, optimal combo routes for different monster openings, and how to effectively use your weapon's unique gauges or resources (e.g., Spirit Gauge for Long Sword, Phials for Charge Blade).

Weapon Progression

When crafting weapons, consider the raw damage, elemental damage, sharpness, affinity, and decoration slots. Different monsters are weak to different elements, so building a diverse arsenal is recommended.
