Character Progression & Leveling
In Monster Hunter Wilds, character progression is primarily tied to your Hunter Rank and the gear you craft and upgrade, rather than a traditional experience point leveling system. As you complete quests, hunt monsters, and gather materials, you'll increase your Hunter Rank, which unlocks new quests, monsters, and areas. Your true power comes from the weapons and armor you forge, allowing you to tackle increasingly formidable foes and explore more dangerous territories.
Your Hunter Rank (HR) is the primary indicator of your overall progression. It increases as you successfully complete hunts and quests. Higher Hunter Ranks unlock access to more challenging monsters, advanced quests, and new tiers of equipment. There isn't a direct 'leveling up' in the traditional RPG sense where you allocate points to stats. Instead, your character's strength is determined by the quality of your equipment and the skills they provide.
The core of character progression lies in crafting and upgrading your gear. After defeating monsters, you'll gather materials such as hides, scales, claws, and fangs. These materials, along with Zenny (the in-game currency), are used at the blacksmith to forge new weapons and armor sets. Each weapon and armor piece has its own stats, elemental properties, and most importantly, skills. Skills are passive abilities that provide various benefits, such as increased attack power, improved defense, faster stamina recovery, or resistance to elemental damage.
Key aspects of character progression include:
- Hunter Rank (HR): Increases with completed quests and hunts, unlocking new content.
- Weapon Upgrades: Crafting and upgrading weapons to increase their raw damage, elemental damage, and sharpness.
- Armor Sets: Forging and upgrading armor to improve defense and acquire beneficial skills.
- Skill System: Equipping gear that provides synergistic skills to create effective builds for different monsters.
- Decorations: Slotting decorations into armor and weapons to further customize and enhance skills.
Your Palico and Seikret companions also have their own progression systems, often tied to their specific abilities and equipment, which can further augment your overall effectiveness in the field.
