Stygian Zinogre
The Stygian Zinogre, a draconic beast infused with draconic energy, is a formidable foe introduced in Monster Hunter World: Iceborne. This variant of Zinogre boasts devastating dragon-elemental attacks and a relentless fighting style, making it a significant challenge for even experienced hunters.
Stygian Zinogre is a subspecies of Zinogre that inhabits the Guiding Lands, specifically the Tundra region when it's at a high enough level. It's characterized by its dark, obsidian-like scales and the glowing draconic energy that courses through its body. Unlike the regular Zinogre, which uses thunder, the Stygian Zinogre channels dragon element, making its attacks incredibly potent and capable of inflicting Dragonblight, which disables elemental damage on your weapons.
Weaknesses and Resistances
Stygian Zinogre is weak to Ice and Blast. It has high resistances to Fire, Water, and Thunder. It is also highly resistant to Dragon. For status effects, it is moderately susceptible to Poison and Paralysis, but highly resistant to Sleep.

Attack Patterns and Strategies
- Charged Attacks: Stygian Zinogre's attacks are amplified by its draconic energy. When charged, its claws and tail glow, and its attacks become faster and hit harder.
- Dragon Element Projectiles: It can shoot orbs of dragon energy that explode on impact.
- Dragon Element Breath: Similar to regular Zinogre's thunder attacks, it can unleash a sweeping breath of dragon energy.
- Leaping Claw Swipes: It will leap and swipe with its charged claws, often in quick succession.
- Tail Slam: A powerful slam of its tail, often with a follow-up sweep.
- Draconic Energy Burst: When fully charged, it can unleash a devastating burst of dragon energy around itself.
The Stygian Zinogre's weak points are its head and tail. Weapons with high Ice elemental damage or Blast status are highly effective. Consider using armor with skills like Evade Window, Evade Extender, and Earplugs to manage its aggressive offense and frequent roars. Bringing Nulberries is crucial to cure Dragonblight if you're using elemental weapons. When it's not charged, it's more vulnerable. Try to break its horns to prevent it from entering its fully charged state as easily. The Temporal Mantle can be invaluable for dodging its rapid attacks. If you're struggling with its dragon element, consider armor with Dragon Resistance.
Recommended Gear
For Master Rank, prioritize armor with high defense and skills that complement your weapon choice. The Glavenus armor set offers Handicraft and Attack Boost, while the Kjarr Ice weapons (if you have them from the Kulve Taroth event) are excellent for exploiting its ice weakness. Always carry Max Potions, Mega Potions, and Nulberries. If you're farming for its materials, focus on breaking its head and tail.
