Finding & Claiming a Settlement
Settlements are player-run communities that can be found and claimed on habitable planets in No Man's Sky. Establishing and managing a settlement provides a unique gameplay loop focused on resource management, citizen happiness, and economic development. It offers a sense of ownership and purpose beyond individual exploration.
Finding a Settlement:
Settlements are not found on every planet. You'll need to use a Planetary Chart (Habitable Outpost), which can be purchased from Cartographers in space stations or obtained as mission rewards. Using this chart will reveal the location of a nearby habitable outpost, which may be a settlement.
Claiming a Settlement:
Upon arriving at a settlement, you'll find it populated by NPCs. To claim it, you must interact with the Settlement Operations Terminal, usually located in the central building. You will be presented with an offer to become the Overseer of the settlement. This usually involves a small unit cost to finalize the claim.
Managing Your Settlement:
Once you are the Overseer, your responsibilities include:
- Citizen Happiness: Keep your citizens happy by addressing their needs, resolving disputes, and ensuring sufficient resources.
- Economic Development: Construct new buildings to generate resources, improve productivity, and attract new settlers. Buildings can include farms, refineries, trade depots, and more.
- Resource Management: Ensure the settlement has adequate supplies of food, power, and building materials.
- Defense: Settlements can be attacked by sentinels or pirates. You'll need to defend your citizens and infrastructure.
- Decision Making: You will be presented with various events and decisions that impact the settlement's growth, happiness, and economy.
Settlement Buildings:
You can construct several buildings within your settlement, each serving a specific purpose:
