Settlement Production & Income
Establish and manage your own settlement to generate passive income and resources in No Man's Sky. Settlements provide a unique gameplay loop focused on building, managing, and optimizing production chains for steady economic growth.
Once you acquire a settlement, you'll be responsible for its development. This involves constructing new buildings, assing tasks to your settlers, and defending against pirate attacks. The buildings you construct will contribute to the settlement's overall productivity, generating resources and Units over time.
Acquiring a Settlement
Settlements can be found by using an Offshore Scanner or by purchasing maps from the Space Station Cartographer. You'll then need to convince the current administrator to cede control to you.
Settlement Buildings and Production
The types of buildings you construct directly influence the settlement's output:
- Resource Extractors: Buildings like the Carbon Planter, Ferrite Dust Collector, or various Gas Extractors will passively generate raw materials.
- Refineries: Constructing Refineries allows for the processing of raw materials into more valuable goods.
- Manufacturing Facilities: These can produce more complex items or components.
- Trade Depots: These buildings are crucial for selling the settlement's generated goods and earning Units.
- Housing: While not directly income-generating, providing housing increases settler happiness and productivity.
Managing Your Settlers
Your settlers are the workforce of your settlement:
- Assing Tasks: You can ass settlers to specific jobs based on the buildings you've constructed.
- Happiness: A happy populace is a productive populace. Ensure they have adequate housing, amenities, and are protected.
- Recruitment: Over time, your settlement can attract new residents.
Earning Income
Income is generated in several ways:
- Passive Resource Generation: Buildings like extractors and planters passively produce resources that can be collected.
- Trade Depots: Selling the settlement's produced goods through Trade Depots generates Units. The more valuable the goods, the higher the income.
- Settlement Rating: A higher settlement rating (based on productivity, happiness, and defense) generally leads to increased income.
- Special Events: Occasionally, your settlement might experience events that lead to a windfall of resources or Units.
Defending Your Settlement
Pirates may occasionally attack your settlement. You'll need to defend it using your own weapons or by rallying your settlers. Successful defense prevents loss of resources and maintains the settlement's productivity.
Tip: Focus on building Trade Depots and facilities that produce high-value goods to maximize your Unit income. Regularly check on your settlement's needs and ass settlers to the most productive roles.
