Black Holes and Wormholes are cosmic phenomena in No Man's Sky that offer rapid transit across vast interstellar distances, fundamentally altering how players approach galactic exploration. While both serve as shortcuts, they have distinct characteristics and implications for your journey.
Black Holes are powerful rifts in spacetime that transport your starship to a distant, randomized location within the same galaxy. Black Holes:
- Discovery: Found through the Atlas Path, by following distress sals from NPCs, or by using a Black Hole Compass.
- Effect: Upon entering a Black Hole, your starship's installed technology modules (in the General inventory) will be damaged, requiring repair. Your ship is then transported to a new, often distant, location within the current galaxy.
- Purpose: Primarily used to make sificant progress towards the Galactic Core, as each jump moves you closer.
- Preparation: It's essential to place valuable technology in cargo slots or have repair kits ready to fix damaged modules after exiting.
Wormholes:
- Discovery: Can be found by scanning for anomalies, through specific missions, or by interacting with certain NPCs. They are often marked on the Galactic Map once discovered.
- Effect: Wormholes provide a stable connection between two specific points in space. Entering a wormhole will transport you to its linked destination without damaging your ship's technology.
- Purpose: Useful for quickly traveling between known, distant systems or for returning to previously visited areas.
- Predictability: Unlike Black Holes, wormholes connect fixed points, making them more reliable for planned travel.
Strategic Use:
- Black Holes for Core Progression: Use Black Holes when your primary goal is to advance towards the Galactic Core, accepting the risk of ship damage for the sificant distance covered.
- Wormholes for Efficiency: Utilize Wormholes for established routes, returning to resource-rich systems, or reaching specific mission objectives without the risk of damage.
- Exploration Tool: Both phenomena can lead to discovering uncharted territories and unique star systems.
