The universe of No Man's Sky is filled with wonders waiting to be cataloged. Discovery and knowledge are not just about finding new things; they are integral to your progression, earning you valuable rewards and a deeper understanding of the galaxy's lore.
Every time you scan a new species of flora, fauna, or mineral, or discover a new planet or star system, it's recorded in your Discovery Log. This log is your personal record of the universe you've explored.
The Discovery Log:
- Flora: Scanning plants reveals their properties, harvestable resources, and potential uses.
- Fauna: Scanning creatures provides information about their behavior, diet, and temperament. Fully scanning a species earns sificant Nanites.
- Minerals: Identifying mineral deposits helps you locate valuable resources.
- Planets & Moons: Discovering celestial bodies adds them to your log.
- Star Systems: Each new system you warp to is recorded.
Rewards for Discovery:
- Nanites: The primary currency for purchasing technology blueprints and upgrades. You earn Nanites for scanning and uploading discoveries.
- Reputation: Discoveries contribute to your standing with the Interloper's Guild, which can unlock rewards and titles.
- Lore: Interacting with Monoliths and ancient ruins provides fragments of lore, revealing the history of the universe and its inhabitants.
Tools for Discovery:
- Scanner/Analysis Visor: Your primary tool for identifying and cataloging. Upgrades enhance its range and speed.
- Terrain Manipulator: Useful for accessing underground flora or mineral deposits.
- Exocraft: Vehicles can help you cover large distances on planets to find new species or points of interest.
Learning Alien Languages:
Interacting with Monoliths and speaking with NPCs from the Gek, Korvax, and Vy'keen species allows you to learn their languages. Each word learned provides context and unlocks deeper understanding of the lore and quests. Learning enough words can also improve your reputation with their respective factions.
Uploading Discoveries:
While discoveries are automatically logged, you must upload them to the Galactic Network to receive rewards. This can be done at any Space Station or through your Discovery Log interface. It's recommended to upload discoveries regularly to maximize your Nanite earnings.
