Star Systems & Galactic Map

The universe of No Man's Sky is comprised of an unfathomable number of star systems, each containing planets, moons, space stations, and various celestial phenomena. Navigating this vast expanse is made possible through the Galactic Map, your primary tool for interstellar travel and understanding your place within the cosmos. Learning to effectively use the Galactic Map is fundamental to exploration and reaching your goals.

The Galactic Map Interface:

Accessed from your ship's cockpit or a space station's Galactic Map terminal, the Galactic Map provides a 3D representation of the galaxy. You can:

  • View Star Systems: See nearby star systems, their types (e.g., yellow, red, blue stars), and the dominant faction within them.
  • Select Destinations: Choose a star system to warp to. Your ship's hyperdrive range determines how far you can travel in a single jump.
  • Plot Courses: The map allows you to plot multi-jump routes to reach distant systems.
  • Filter Views: You can filter the map to show specific types of systems, mission destinations, or systems visited by other players.

Types of Star Systems:

Star systems are categorized by the color of their star, which dictates the types of planets and resources found within:

  • Yellow Stars: The most common type, offering a balanced variety of planets and resources.
  • Red Stars: Often contain planets rich in valuable minerals like Cadmium, essential for advanced warp drives.
  • Blue Stars: Typically host planets with rare resources like Indium, crucial for high-end crafting and upgrades.
  • Green Stars: Less common, these systems can offer unique planetary conditions and resources.

Warping Between Systems:

To warp to a new star system, you need:

  • Warp Fuel: Typically Antimatter or Warp Cells, crafted from basic resources.
  • Hyperdrive: Your ship must be equipped with a functional hyperdrive.
  • Sufficient Range: Your hyperdrive must have enough range to reach the target system. Upgrading your hyperdrive with modules is essential for long-distance travel.

Navigating the Map:

  1. Open the Galactic Map.
  2. Use your cursor to highlight nearby star systems. Information about the system (faction, star type, economy) will appear.
  3. Select a system and choose 'Warp To System'. If you have enough warp fuel and your hyperdrive is charged, your ship will initiate the warp sequence.
  4. For longer distances, plot a course by selecting multiple systems in sequence.

Special Destinations:

  • The Anomaly: This unique space station can be summoned to any system and serves as a multiplayer hub.
  • Atlas Interfaces: These are special locations tied to the main story, often found using the Galactic Map.
  • Black Holes: These can be found through specific missions or by interacting with certain NPCs, offering a risky but potentially fast way to travel towards the galactic center.

Mastering the Galactic Map and understanding star system types will allow you to efficiently explore the galaxy, find rare resources, and pursue your objectives in No Man's Sky.
