Starting Out in No Man's Sky

Your journey in No Man's Sky begins on a procedurally generated planet with a damaged starship and a basic Multi-Tool. The initial hours are focused on survival: gathering essential resources, repairing your ship's critical systems, and understanding the fundamental mechanics of exploration and resource management. Mastering these early steps is key to venturing beyond your starting world.

The core objective upon starting is to repair your ship's Pulse Engine and Hyperdrive. This requires specific crafting materials and blueprints, often found by mining resources, scanning your surroundings, and interacting with nearby structures or crashed ships. Following the on-screen prompts and utilizing your Analysis Visor will guide you through these crucial first tasks.

Your First Steps to Survival:

  1. Assess Your Situation: Upon waking up, you'll find yourself near your crashed starship. Your suit's hazard protection will likely be low, and your ship will be inoperable.
  2. Scan Your Environment: Use your Analysis Visor (default key 'F' on PC) to scan the immediate area. This will highlight nearby resources and points of interest.
  3. Gather Carbon: Look for plants and mine them with your Multi-Tool to collect Carbon. This is vital for recharging your life support and hazard protection.
  4. Gather Ferrite Dust: Mine nearby rocks and terrain features to collect Ferrite Dust. This is needed for basic repairs and crafting.
  5. Repair Hazard Protection: If your hazard protection is low, find glowing plants or Sodium deposits to gather Sodium. Use it to recharge your suit's protection.
  6. Repair Your Ship's Life Support: Your ship's Life Support system will need Carbon to be repaired.
  7. Craft a Portable Refiner: You'll need Carbon and Ferrite Dust to craft a Portable Refiner. This allows you to convert raw materials into more useful components.
  8. Craft Antimatter Housing: To repair the Pulse Engine, you'll need Antimatter. First, craft Antimatter Housing using Carbon and Ferrite Dust.
  9. Craft Condensed Carbon: Refine Carbon in your Portable Refiner to create Condensed Carbon.
  10. Craft Antimatter: Combine Antimatter Housing and Condensed Carbon in your inventory to craft Antimatter.
  11. Repair the Pulse Engine: Use the crafted Antimatter to repair your ship's Pulse Engine.
  12. Find a Manufacturing Facility or Crashed Ship: To repair the Hyperdrive, you'll need a Warp Cell. This requires Antimatter and a Heat Capacitor. You'll likely need to find blueprints for these. Use your Sal Booster to locate nearby Manufacturing Facilities or crashed ships.
  13. Solve Manufacturing Facility Puzzles: Successfully completing the puzzles inside Manufacturing Facilities often rewards you with blueprints for essential components like Warp Cells or Antimatter Housing.
  14. Craft a Heat Capacitor: Once you have the blueprint, craft a Heat Capacitor using Ferrite Dust and Frost Crystals (found on frozen planets or grown later).
  15. Craft a Warp Cell: Combine Antimatter and a Heat Capacitor in your inventory to craft a Warp Cell.
  16. Repair the Hyperdrive: Use the Warp Cell to repair your ship's Hyperdrive.
  17. Take Off and Jump: With your Hyperdrive repaired, you can now open your galactic map and initiate your first warp jump to a nearby star system.

Remember to save your game frequently, especially after completing major repair steps.
