Freighter Acquisition & Types
Freighters are massive capital ships that serve as mobile bases and command centers in No Man's Sky. Acquiring one is a sificant step, offering vast storage, fleet management capabilities, and a personal space-faring home. Freighters come in various types and classes, each with its own strengths and weaknesses.
Acquisition Methods:
- Freighter Battle Encounter: After a set number of warp jumps (typically 5), you will warp into a system where a large freighter is under attack by pirates. Defeating the pirates will allow you to board and potentially claim the freighter. You can either accept a free, likely low-class freighter or purchase a more advanced one.
- Purchasing from Space Stations: While less common for capital freighters, some smaller freighter-like vessels might be available for purchase in certain space stations.
- Freighter Missions: Occasionally, missions may lead you to opportunities to acquire a freighter.
Freighter Types:
Freighters are categorized by their size and des. The most common types are:
- System Freighters: These are smaller, more utilitarian freighters that are often the first ones players acquire. They are less imposing but still offer sificant cargo space.
- Capital Freighters: These are the largest and most impressive freighters, often referred to as "Super Star Destroyers." They have a commanding presence in space and offer the most extensive customization and fleet command capabilities.
Freighter Classes:
Like other vehicles, freighters come in four classes: C, B, A, and S. The class determines the freighter's base statistics, such as:
- Inventory Slots: Higher-class freighters have more cargo space.
- Hyperdrive Range: Better freighters can warp further.
- Combat and Shield Stats: Important if your freighter is attacked.
- Special Modules: S-class freighters often come with powerful, unique modules.
Upgrading Freighters:
You can upgrade a freighter's class using Nanites at a freighter upgrade station. This is a costly but worthwhile endeavor to maximize your freighter's potential. You can also expand its inventory slots by purchasing Freighter Upgrade Modules.
Key Features of a Freighter:
- Mobile Base: Build and customize your own base within the freighter.
- Cargo Hold: Store vast amounts of resources and items.
- Fleet Command: Send frigates on expeditions to gather resources and earn units.
- Starship Storage: Store up to six of your starships within the freighter's hangar.
- Teleportation: Summon your freighter to any system you are currently in.
| Freighter Type | Size | Primary Role | Acquisition Method |
|---|---|---|---|
| System Freighter | Small to Medium | Cargo, initial base | Freighter battle encounter (often free). |
| Capital Freighter | Large to Massive | Fleet command, extensive base, high cargo | Freighter battle encounter (purchase), rare mission rewards. |
When encountering a freighter battle, take note of the freighter's appearance and class. If it's not to your liking, you can warp to another system and trigger another encounter. Patience and saving units are key to acquiring a top-tier freighter.
