Freighters & Capital Ships
Freighters and Capital Ships represent the pinnacle of mobile bases and cargo haulers in No Man's Sky. These massive vessels offer unparalleled storage, serve as command centers for your fleet, and can be customized to your liking.
Freighters are acquired by responding to a distress call that occurs after a certain amount of playtime or warp jumps. You'll have the option to purchase the freighter or fight off pirates attacking it. If you choose to purchase, your current ship will be traded in or you'll pay with Units.
Types of Freighters:
- Freighters: Standard freighters come in various sizes and classes (C, B, A, S). Larger freighters offer more freighter inventory slots and room for base building.
- Capital Ships: These are the largest and most imposing freighters, often referred to as Dreadnoughts. They are rare and command a high price.
Freighter Inventory & Base Building:
Freighters have a dedicated inventory system, separate from your Exosuit and Starships, offering a vast amount of storage. Crucially, you can build bases within your freighter, allowing you to create a mobile command center, farm, or manufacturing hub that travels with you across the galaxy.
Freighter Modules & Upgrades:
While Freighters don't have weapon or shield upgrades in the same way as Starships, they can be upgraded:
- Freighter Hyperdrive: Increases the warp range of your freighter, allowing it to jump to more distant systems.
- Freighter Cargo Pods: Expand the inventory space of your freighter.
These upgrades are typically purchased from vendors at space stations or found as rewards.
Fleet Command:
Once you own a freighter, you can recruit frigates to form a fleet. These frigates can be sent out on expeditions to gather resources, engage in combat, or explore distant sectors. You can manage your fleet from the freighter's bridge.
Expedition Management:
- Frigate Types: There are various frigate types (Combat, Exploration, Support, Trade, Industrial), each with different strengths and expedition bonuses.
- Expedition Planning: Choose expeditions that match your frigates' strengths to maximize success rates and rewards.
- Expedition Rewards: Frigates return with Units, rare resources, and sometimes even new frigates.
Acquiring New Freighters:
If you find a freighter you like better, you can purchase it. Your current freighter's inventory and base will be transferred to the new one, but any installed freighter modules will be lost.
Freighters are a sificant investment, but they provide an invaluable mobile base and a powerful means of managing your interstellar operations. They are a testament to your growing influence in the galaxy.
