Endgame Activities & Progression
Congratulations, Exile! You've conquered the campaign and faced the immediate threats to Wraeclast. But your journey is far from over. Path of Exile 2's endgame is a sprawling, intricate system designed for endless replayability, character optimization, and the ultimate test of your build's prowess. This section will guide you through the initial steps and advanced strategies for dominating the endgame.
The Atlas of Worlds: Your Gateway to Power
The Atlas of Worlds is the core of Path of Exile 2's endgame. After completing the main story, you'll gain access to the Atlas, a celestial map representing interconnected regions of Wraeclast, each containing various unique maps. Your primary goal is to progress through these maps, unlocking new ones and increasing their difficulty.
Initial Atlas Progression
- First Map Drop: Upon defeating the final boss of the campaign, you'll receive your first Map item, typically a Tier 1 map like the Strand Map or Dunes Map.
- The Map Device: Return to your Hideout or a major town (e.g., Lioneye's Watch, Oriath Docks) and locate the Map Device. Place your Map item into the device and activate it to open portals to the map.
- Complete Map Objectives: Each map has a boss. Defeating the boss is crucial for progression, as it often drops more maps, including higher-tier ones.
- Atlas Completion Bonus: For every map you complete (defeat its boss) for the first time, you gain an Atlas Completion Bonus, permanently increasing the chance for higher-tier maps to drop.
- Shaping the Atlas: As you progress, you'll encounter various Atlas mechanics that allow you to influence map drops, such as the ability to "Shaper" or "Elder" certain regions, or use special Sextants on your Watchstones.
Map Modifiers and Difficulty
Maps come with various modifiers that increase their difficulty and, consequently, their rewards. Always check these modifiers before entering a map:
- Magic Maps (Blue): Use an Orb of Transmutation to turn a Normal (white) map into a Magic map. These have 1-2 modifiers.
- Rare Maps (Yellow): Use an Orb of Alchemy to turn a Normal map into a Rare map. These have 3-6 modifiers and significantly increased rewards.
- Corrupted Maps (Red Border): Use a Vaal Orb on any map. This randomizes its modifiers, potentially adding a difficult "Vaal" modifier, or even transforming it into a unique map. Corrupted maps cannot be further modified.
Strategy: For early Atlas progression, focus on completing all white and yellow maps to maximize your Atlas Completion Bonus. Once you hit red maps (Tier 11+), consider carefully rolling your maps with Chaos Orbs to ensure favorable modifiers for your build, avoiding those that are particularly detrimental (e.g., "Players cannot regenerate Life, Mana, or Energy Shield" for a regeneration-reliant build).
Advanced Endgame Systems
Conquerors of the Atlas & Watchstones
Beyond the initial Atlas, you'll encounter the Conquerors of the Atlas. These powerful bosses (e.g., Al-Hezmin, the Hunter; Baran, the Crusader) occupy specific regions of your Atlas. Defeating them rewards you with Watchstones. These Watchstones are socketed into your Atlas regions, permanently increasing the tier of maps that drop within that region and unlocking access to even higher-tier content.
- Obtaining Watchstones: Run maps in a region until a Conqueror influence appears. Continue running maps within that region to gather enough "Conqueror's Exalt" fragments. Once enough fragments are collected, the Conqueror's Citadel will appear, allowing you to challenge them.
- Socketing Watchstones: Open your Atlas and drag the acquired Watchstones into the designated slots in each region. Each region can hold up to four Watchstones.
- Tier Escalation: As you socket more Watchstones, the map tiers in that region will increase, eventually leading to Tier 14-16 maps.
Maven & The Elderslayers
Once you've collected a significant number of Watchstones, a new entity known as The Maven will begin to observe your progress. She introduces a new layer of boss encounters and challenges:
- Maven's Invitations: The Maven will periodically offer you "Invitations" after you defeat multiple map bosses in her presence. These invitations require you to defeat several previously encountered bosses simultaneously within a special arena.
- Maven's Orb: A highly valuable currency item that can be used to upgrade certain unique items or influence modifiers on gear.
- The Elderslayers: Eventually, you'll face the ultimate challenge of the Atlas: the Elderslayers, powerful beings that once served the Elder. These are some of the most difficult encounters in the game, requiring finely tuned builds and expert mechanics.
Currency Farming & Item Acquisition
The endgame is where true item progression happens. Efficiently acquiring currency and powerful items is key to tackling the hardest content.
- Map Modifiers: Always aim for high "Item Quantity" and "Item Rarity" modifiers on your maps. Use Cartographer's Chisels to increase map quality before rolling modifiers.
- League Mechanics: Engage with current league mechanics (e.g., Blight, Delirium, Expedition) within your maps. These often provide significant additional rewards, including unique currency, crafting materials, and powerful items.
- Vendor Recipes: Don't forget established vendor recipes. For example, selling a full set of rare items (weapon, helmet, body armour, gloves, boots, belt, two rings, amulet) will yield Chaos Orbs if all items are unidentified and item level 60-74, or Regal Orbs if identified.
- Trading: The player-driven economy is a vital part of PoE2. Use the in-game trade system or third-party websites to buy and sell items. Understanding market prices for Exalted Orbs, Divine Orbs, and other high-value currency is essential.
Character Optimization & Crafting
To truly excel, you'll need to optimize your character's gear and passive tree. This involves advanced crafting and understanding complex item interactions.
- Crafting Bench: Your Hideout's Crafting Bench allows you to add specific modifiers to items using various currency. Unlock more crafting options by finding them in maps or completing specific quests.
- Essences: Essences are powerful crafting items that guarantee a specific modifier when used on a normal or magic item, or re-roll modifiers on a rare item while guaranteeing one.
- Fossils & Resonators: Found in the Delve mechanic, Fossils combined with Resonators allow for highly targeted crafting, restricting the pool of possible modifiers.
- Influenced Items: Items with Shaper, Elder, Conqueror, or Maven influence can roll unique and powerful modifiers not found on regular items. These are often the backbone of top-tier builds.
Remember, the Path of Exile 2 endgame is a marathon, not a sprint. Experiment with different builds, learn the mechanics, and enjoy the endless pursuit of power!
