Movement Skills & Mobility
In Path of Exile 2, effective use of movement skills is paramount for survival, efficient farming, and navigating the treacherous world of Wraeclast. These skills not only allow you to reposition quickly but also serve as crucial defensive layers, enabling you to dodge lethal attacks and escape dangerous situations. Mastering mobility will significantly enhance your gameplay experience.
Early Game Mobility: Securing Your First Movement Skill
Acquiring a reliable movement skill early in your journey is a top priority. Most classes gain access to a basic movement skill gem within the first few acts. Prioritize linking this skill to support gems that enhance its utility.
- Act 1 Acquisition:
- Warrior/Mercenary: Look for the Leap Slam gem. This skill allows you to jump over obstacles and enemies, dealing damage upon landing. It's often available as a quest reward from Nessa in the Lioneye's Watch after completing the "Mercy Mission" quest.
- Ranger/Huntress: The Dash gem is your go-to. It provides a quick burst of movement in a target direction. Typically offered by Tarkleigh in Lioneye's Watch after clearing the Mud Flats.
- Mage/Acolyte: Flame Dash is an excellent choice for spellcasters, offering a short teleport that leaves a trail of fire. You can often purchase this from Nessa or Tarkleigh after completing early Act 1 quests.
- Initial Support Gem Link:
- For most early movement skills, linking with a Faster Attacks Support (for attack-based skills like Leap Slam) or Faster Casting Support (for spell-based skills like Flame Dash) will immediately improve their responsiveness and reduce their cooldown. These support gems are commonly found as quest rewards or purchasable from vendors in Act 1 and Act 2.
Mid-Game Enhancements: Optimizing Your Movement
As you progress, you'll gain access to more powerful movement skills and a wider array of support gems to customize their functionality.
- Advanced Movement Skills:
- Whirlwind: A channeled melee skill that grants movement while attacking. Excellent for builds that want to maintain constant pressure. Often drops from enemies in Act 3 or can be purchased from Clarissa in the Sarn Encampment.
- Blink Arrow/Mirror Arrow: Ranger-specific skills that create a clone and teleport you to its location. Acquired in Act 3 or 4.
- Lightning Warp: A powerful spell-based teleport that can be linked with Less Duration Support to significantly reduce its delay, making it a very fast travel option. Typically available from Siosa in the Library (Act 3).
- Key Support Gems for Mobility:
- Second Wind Support: Grants an additional charge and reduces cooldown recovery time for supported skills. This is a game-changer for skills like Dash, Flame Dash, and Leap Slam, allowing for multiple uses in quick succession. Highly recommended for almost any movement skill.
- Lifetap Support: If your movement skill has a high mana cost, linking it with Lifetap can convert the cost to life, freeing up your mana for other abilities. This is particularly useful for builds with strong life regeneration or leech.
- Fortify Support: For melee movement skills like Leap Slam or Shield Charge, linking with Fortify grants a significant defensive buff upon use, reducing incoming damage.
- Increased Duration Support: Can be useful for skills that leave behind effects or for maintaining buffs, though generally Less Duration Support is preferred for Lightning Warp.
Advanced Strategies & Gear Considerations
Beyond skill gems, several gear pieces and passive tree nodes can significantly impact your mobility.
Gear Affixes and Uniques
- Movement Speed: Prioritize boots with high Increased Movement Speed affixes. Aim for 25% or higher.
- Cooldown Recovery Rate: This stat, found on various gear pieces (belts, amulets, boots, and some unique items), directly reduces the cooldown of your movement skills. Look for items like "The Adorned" unique amulet or rare belts with crafted Cooldown Recovery Rate.
- Attack/Cast Speed: For attack-based or spell-based movement skills, increasing your Attack Speed or Cast Speed will make them feel much more responsive.
- Unique Items:
- "Queen of the Forest" (Body Armour): Provides an enormous amount of movement speed based on your Evasion Rating. A staple for Evasion-based builds.
- "Devoto's Devotion" (Helmet): Grants a significant boost to movement speed and attack speed, making it excellent for many builds.
Passive Tree Integration
- Travel Nodes: Many ascendancy classes and general passive tree paths offer nodes that provide Increased Movement Speed or Cooldown Recovery Rate. Plan your tree to incorporate these where possible.
- Attack/Cast Speed Nodes: Ensure your tree supports the type of movement skill you're using by picking up relevant attack or cast speed nodes.
- Specific Ascendancy Perks: Some ascendancies offer unique mobility benefits. For example, the Ranger's Deadeye can gain extra projectiles for movement skills or increased action speed.
Practical Application
Always keep your movement skill on an easily accessible keybind. Practice using it to:
- Dodge Area-of-Effect (AoE) Attacks: Many boss mechanics and rare monster abilities have telegraphs. Use your movement skill to quickly exit the danger zone.
- Traverse Terrain: Leap Slam and Flame Dash can bypass ledges, gaps, and even some enemy formations, saving valuable time.
- Escape Encounters: If you find yourself overwhelmed, a well-timed movement skill can be the difference between life and death.
- Initiate Combat: Some builds use movement skills to quickly close the distance to enemies and engage.
