New Game Plus
Welcome back, Phantom Thief! Starting a New Game Plus (NG+) in Persona 5 Royal offers a fantastic opportunity to experience the game with significant advantages, allowing you to focus on missed content, optimize your Confidant ranks, or challenge yourself with the optional superbosses. Unlike a fresh playthrough, NG+ carries over several key elements, making your journey through Tokyo and the Metaverse much smoother.
What Carries Over?
Understanding what transfers to NG+ is crucial for planning your next playthrough:
- Social Stats: Your maxed-out Guts, Knowledge, Proficiency, Kindness, and Charm will all carry over. This is arguably the biggest advantage, as it removes the time sink of stat-grinding and immediately unlocks dialogue options and Confidant requirements that were previously gated.
- Persona Compendium: All registered Personas in your Compendium, along with their stats and skills, are available for summoning from the start. This includes any Personas fused or obtained during your previous run.
- Money: Your accumulated Yen carries over, providing a substantial financial boost for buying equipment, healing items, and summoning powerful Personas.
- Equipment: All weapons, armor, and accessories you possessed at the end of your previous game will be in your inventory. This includes powerful end-game gear and any unique items.
- Skill Cards: Any Skill Cards you collected will transfer, allowing you to customize your Personas from the get-go.
- Key Items (Specific): Certain key items that unlock special features or challenges carry over. These include:
- Christmas Gifts: The gifts received from maxed Confidants on Christmas Eve. These grant powerful accessories with unique abilities.
- Special Battle Items: Items like the "Omnipotent Orb" (from defeating the Reaper) or "Crystal Skull" accessories.
- Challenge Battle Rewards: Any accessories or items earned from the Thieves Den Challenge Battles.
- Thieves Den Progress: All awards, achievements, and unlocked content within the Thieves Den remain.
- Fusion Alarms: The ability to trigger Fusion Alarms and Electric Chair executions will be available once the Velvet Room functions are unlocked.
- Special Confidant Abilities: Certain abilities from maxed Confidants, such as the ability to fuse specific Ultimate Personas (e.g., Satanael from the Fool Arcana), will be available.
What Does NOT Carry Over?
- Joker's Level & Personas: Joker will start at Level 1, and all Personas in your active stock will be gone. Only the Compendium remains.
- Confidant Ranks: All Confidant ranks reset to 0. You'll need to re-establish your bonds.
- Consumable Items: Healing items, battle items, and other single-use consumables do not carry over.
- Mementos Progress: Mementos will reset, and you'll need to unlock new areas as you progress through the story.
- Story Progress: The main story, including Palaces and their completion, resets entirely.
Recommended Strategies for NG+
1. Maxing Confidants & Social Links
With maxed Social Stats, your primary focus can shift to efficiently maxing out all Confidants. This is significantly easier in NG+:
- Fortune Teller (Chihaya Mifune - Fortune Arcana): Prioritize ranking up Chihaya early. Her "Celestial Reading" ability (Rank 7) is invaluable for boosting Confidant relationship points, allowing you to progress faster without needing to spend extra days. Her "Special Fate Reading" (Rank 5) also helps identify the best Confidant to spend time with.
- Temperance (Sadayo Kawakami - Temperance Arcana): Maxing Kawakami is another top priority. Her "Special Massage" (Rank 1) allows you to go out at night even after exploring a Palace or Mementos, effectively doubling your available time. Her "Housekeeping" (Rank 5) and "Maid Chores" (Rank 10) also save time by doing laundry or crafting tools for you.
- Matching Arcana Personas: Always have a Persona of the matching Arcana in your stock when spending time with a Confidant for maximum relationship point gains. With your full Compendium, this is simple to manage.
- Efficient Time Management: Since social stats are maxed, you can ignore activities like studying, working out, or reading books for stat boosts. Focus entirely on Confidants, Mementos requests, and Palace infiltration.
2. Challenging the Superbosses
NG+ unlocks access to two formidable optional bosses:
- The Reaper: While available in a regular playthrough, defeating the Reaper in NG+ is far more manageable with your carried-over equipment and access to powerful Personas. You can encounter the Reaper by lingering on a single floor in Mementos for too long. Prepare with strong Personas like Yoshitsune (Hassou Tobi) or Satanael.
- Jose's Challenge Battle (Thieves Den): After completing the game on NG+, Jose will offer a special Challenge Battle in the Thieves Den. This is a true test of your team's strength and Persona optimization.
- Preparation: Ensure Joker has a diverse set of Personas covering all elemental affinities and physical attacks. Personas like Izanagi-no-Okami Picaro (DLC), Kaguya Picaro (DLC), or crafted Personas with powerful skills like "Charge," "Concentrate," "God's Hand," "Myriad Truths," "Morning Star," and "Repel/Drain" skills are highly recommended.
- Team Composition: A balanced team with strong healers (e.g., Makoto, Morgana), damage dealers (e.g., Ryuji, Yusuke), and support (e.g., Ann, Haru) is essential.
- Items: Stock up on SP recovery items (e.g., "Coffee," "Curry," "Soul Food" from Jose's shop), healing items, and stat buffs/debuffs.
3. Completing the Compendium & Trophies
NG+ is the ideal time to complete your Persona Compendium and earn any remaining trophies:
- Compendium Completion: With all Personas from your previous run available, focus on fusing any missing Personas. Use the "Fusion Alarm" mechanic strategically for powerful skill inheritance and stat boosts.
- Thieves Den Awards: Many Thieves Den awards require specific actions or multiple playthroughs. Use your NG+ run to target these, such as defeating all Mementos bosses, reading all books, or catching the legendary fish.
- "Bookworm" Trophy: If you missed reading all books, your maxed Knowledge and the ability to ignore social stat requirements free up ample time for reading. Remember to buy books from Shinjuku's bookstore and the school library.
- "Master of the Phantom Thieves" Trophy: Maxing all Confidants is much easier in NG+ due to maxed social stats and the benefits of the Fortune and Temperance Confidants.
4. Experimentation and Fun
simply enjoy the game! NG+ allows you to:
- Try New Personas: Experiment with Personas you might have overlooked in your first playthrough.
- Explore Dialogue Options: Choose different dialogue options with Confidants or during story events to see new reactions.
- Optimize Palace Runs: With powerful equipment and Personas, you can clear Palaces in a single day, maximizing your free time.
Embrace the freedom and power of NG+ to truly master Persona 5 Royal!
