Combat Optimization & Technical Damage — Persona 5 Royal Guide

Optimize combat in Persona 5 Royal by understanding enemy weaknesses and technical damage, especially against Black Frost.

Combat Optimization & Technical Damage

Optimizing combat in Persona 5 Royal involves understanding enemy weaknesses, managing status effects, and utilizing team tactics. Pay attention to changes in combat mechanics, such as gun ammunition regeneration, and configure team commands effectively. Strategic Persona choices and item usage are crucial for overcoming challenging encounters.

Combat Basics and New Mechanics (April 12th)

On April 12th, you will re-enter the Palace with Ryuji. Morgana will guide you through combat basics, highlighting changes from the original Persona 5:

  • Guns: Ammunition for guns now regains after every fight.
  • Tactics: Morgana will demonstrate how to set commands for your team using the Tactics option.

Key Combat Encounters and Strategies

  • Kamoshida's Palace (April 15th): Ann will join your team and have her introductory battle.
  • Mementos Fight: Black Frost/Shadow Sakoda (Request: "One Who Bullies Bullies")
    • Location: Aiyatsubus 5th Floor.
    • Availability: Complete Request "The Bark and Bite of a Bully."
    • Research: Required. Listen to a conversation near the vending machines at the School Gate in Aoyama-Itchome to start.
    • Resistances: Black Frost repels Fire, drains Ice, is immune to Nuclear, and repels Curse. Do not use Mudoon.
    • Attacks: Powerful Physical attack, Mamudo (low-level Curse skill with instant kill chance), Mabufu (Ice attack hitting everyone).
    • Strategy:
      • Leave Ann behind due to Mabufu giving Black Frost an extra turn and Fire being ineffective.
      • Yusuke can help with resistances.
      • Equip a Persona that resists Curse to counter Mamudo.
      • Morgana's Lucky Punch and Ryuji/Yusuke's physical attacks are effective.
      • Personas like Inugami and Jack Frost (found in Madarame's Palace) can be useful.
    • Boss Fight (Unnamed): This boss uses Evil Touch to inflict Fear, which can paralyze team members or cause them to leave. It also uses Lucky Punch for critical damage.
    • Strategy:
      • If you have Personas that resist Physical attacks (e.g., Slime), use them.
      • Buy and use items that cure Fear immediately.
      • The boss's attacks, apart from Lucky Punch, are not severely damaging.
      • There are no Ice attacks, so Ann is not at risk of being knocked down.
