Type Chart & Effectiveness
Understanding the Type Chart is paramount to success in Pokémon Colosseum. Every Pokémon and every attack has a type, and these types interact in a rock-paper-scissors fashion, determining how much damage your attacks will inflict or absorb. Mastering these interactions will allow you to sweep through opponents, protect your team, and efficiently snag Shadow Pokémon.
The Basics of Type Effectiveness
When an attack's type interacts with a defending Pokémon's type, one of three outcomes occurs:
- Super Effective (2x Damage): Your attack deals double the normal damage. This is indicated by the message "It's super effective!" on screen. Always aim for these when possible.
- Not Very Effective (0.5x Damage): Your attack deals half the normal damage. The message "It's not very effective..." will appear. Avoid these situations, especially when trying to quickly defeat an opponent.
- No Effect (0x Damage): Your attack deals no damage at all. The message "It doesn't affect [Pokémon's Name]..." will be displayed. This is the worst-case scenario and signifies a wasted turn.
- Normal Effectiveness (1x Damage): If none of the above apply, the attack deals standard damage.
Dual-Type Pokémon
Many Pokémon in Colosseum, especially later in the game, have two types. When this occurs, the effectiveness of an attack is multiplied by both types. For example, a Grass-type attack against a Water/Ground-type Pokémon would be:
- Super Effective against Water (2x)
- Super Effective against Ground (2x)
- Total effectiveness: 2x * 2x = 4x damage!
Conversely, a Flying-type attack against a Rock/Ground-type would be:
- Not Very Effective against Rock (0.5x)
- Super Effective against Ground (2x)
- Total effectiveness: 0.5x * 2x = 1x damage!
Always consider both types of your opponent when planning your moves.
Strategic Application in Colosseum
In Colosseum's 2-on-2 battles, type effectiveness becomes even more critical. You can strategically pair your Pokémon to cover each other's weaknesses or to unleash devastating double Super Effective attacks. For example, if you have a Fire-type and a Water-type Pokémon, the Water-type can protect the Fire-type from Ground or Rock attacks, while the Fire-type can handle Grass or Ice threats to the Water-type.
Key Strategies:
- Identify Opponent Types: Before every battle, quickly assess the types of the opposing Pokémon. This will inform your initial move choices.
- Prioritize Super Effective Attacks: Always aim to use moves that are Super Effective. This not only deals more damage but also helps in quickly reducing the opponent's HP, making them easier to snag if they are Shadow Pokémon.
- Switching for Advantage: Don't be afraid to switch out a Pokémon that is facing a Super Effective attack or is using a Not Very Effective move. Swapping to a Pokémon with a type advantage can turn the tide of battle.
- use Coverage Moves: Ensure your Pokémon have a diverse movepool. A Pokémon that can learn moves of different types can hit a wider range of opponents for Super Effective damage, even if its own type doesn't naturally provide that advantage. For instance, a Sneasel (Dark/Ice) learning a Fighting-type move like Focus Punch can counter its Rock and Steel weaknesses.
- Shadow Pokémon Snagging: When attempting to snag Shadow Pokémon, dealing Super Effective damage is often necessary to lower their HP quickly without knocking them out. However, be mindful not to overdo it. Using a weaker, Not Very Effective move can sometimes be better for chipping away HP safely.
