Battle Mechanics: Status Conditions and Stat Changes
Mastering status conditions and stat changes is crucial for success in Pokémon Crystal. Understanding how these mechanics work and how to counteract or utilize them can turn the tide of any battle, from challenging Gym Leaders to conquering the Elite Four.
Major Status Conditions (Non-Volatile)
These conditions persist outside of battle unless cured, and have significant effects. Only one major status condition can affect a Pokémon at a time.
- Poison (PSN):
- Effect: Gradually drains HP each turn in battle and every four steps on the overworld. Severe Poison (caused by moves like Toxic) deals increasing damage each turn in battle.
- Cure Items:
- Antidote: Cures Poison. Purchase at any Poké Mart for 100 Pokedollars.
- Full Heal: Cures all major status conditions. Found in various locations (e.g., Goldenrod Dept. Store 6F for 600 Pokedollars) and as hidden items.
- Full Restore: Cures all major status conditions and fully restores HP. Expensive (3000 Pokedollars at Indigo Plateau) but invaluable for tough battles.
- Strategy: Be wary of Poison-type Pokémon like Nidoran♀/♂ or Zubat. Carry Antidotes, especially when exploring caves like Mt. Moon or Union Cave.
- Paralysis (PRZ):
- Effect: Reduces Speed by 75% and has a 25% chance of preventing the Pokémon from attacking each turn.
- Cure Items:
- Paralyze Heal: Cures Paralysis. Purchase at any Poké Mart for 200 Pokedollars.
- Full Heal/Full Restore: As above.
- Strategy: Electric-type Pokémon commonly inflict Paralysis. Prioritize curing this, especially on fast attackers.
- Burn (BRN):
- Effect: Gradually drains HP each turn in battle and halves the Pokémon's Attack stat.
- Cure Items:
- Burn Heal: Cures Burn. Purchase at any Poké Mart for 250 Pokedollars.
- Full Heal/Full Restore: As above.
- Strategy: Fire-type Pokémon are the main culprits. Physical attackers are severely hampered by Burn.
- Freeze (FRZ):
- Effect: Prevents the Pokémon from acting. This is the rarest status condition to inflict.
- Cure Items:
- Ice Heal: Cures Freeze. Purchase at any Poké Mart for 250 Pokedollars.
- Full Heal/Full Restore: As above.
- Strategy: While rare, being frozen can be devastating. Ice-type moves are the only way to inflict it.
- Sleep (SLP):
- Effect: Prevents the Pokémon from acting for 1-7 turns.
- Cure Items:
- Awakening: Cures Sleep. Purchase at any Poké Mart for 250 Pokedollars.
- Full Heal/Full Restore: As above.
- Strategy: Grass-type Pokémon (e.g., Oddish, Bellsprout) often use Sleep Powder. Consider equipping a Chesto Berry (found on Route 30, Route 31, or given by a lady in Violet City) to immediately wake up a sleeping Pokémon once.
Minor Status Conditions (Volatile)
These conditions typically disappear after battle or after a few turns. Multiple minor status conditions can affect a Pokémon simultaneously.
- Confusion:
- Effect: 50% chance to hit itself instead of attacking. Lasts for 1-4 turns.
- Cure Items:
- Persim Berry: Cures Confusion. Found on Route 29, Route 38, or given by a lady in Violet City.
- Switching out the Pokémon also cures Confusion.
- Strategy: Moves like Confuse Ray or Supersonic cause this. It can be very disruptive.
- Infatuation:
- Effect: 50% chance to not attack if the opponent is of the opposite gender. Lasts until the infatuated Pokémon is switched out or the opponent is defeated.
- Cure Items:
- Switching out the Pokémon.
- Mental Herb: Cures Infatuation (and other volatile status conditions like Taunt, Encore, Torment, though these are less common in Crystal). Found in various locations, often as a hidden item.
- Strategy: Caused by the move Attract. Be mindful of your Pokémon's gender when facing opponents that use this.
- Leech Seed:
- Effect: Drains 1/8th of the target's max HP each turn and restores the user's HP by the same amount. Lasts until the seeded Pokémon is switched out.
- Cure Items: Switching out the Pokémon.
- Strategy: Grass-type move. Can be annoying in long battles.
Stat Changes (Temporary)
Stat changes modify a Pokémon's stats (Attack, Defense, Special Attack, Special Defense, Speed, Accuracy, Evasion) by "stages." Each stage represents a multiplier. These reset after battle or when the Pokémon is switched out.
- Stages and Multipliers:
- Attack, Defense, Special Attack, Special Defense, Speed:
- +1 Stage: 1.5x
- +2 Stages: 2.0x
- +3 Stages: 2.5x
- +4 Stages: 3.0x
- +5 Stages: 3.5x
- +6 Stages: 4.0x (Maximum)
- -1 Stage: 0.66x
- -2 Stages: 0.5x
- -3 Stages: 0.4x
- -4 Stages: 0.33x
- -5 Stages: 0.28x
- -6 Stages: 0.25x (Minimum)
- Accuracy and Evasion:
- +1 Stage: 1.33x
- +2 Stages: 1.66x
- +3 Stages: 2.0x
- +4 Stages: 2.33x
- +5 Stages: 2.66x
- +6 Stages: 3.0x (Maximum)
- -1 Stage: 0.75x
- -2 Stages: 0.6x
- -3 Stages: 0.5x
- -4 Stages: 0.42x
- -5 Stages: 0.37x
- -6 Stages: 0.33x (Minimum)
- Attack, Defense, Special Attack, Special Defense, Speed:
- Key Stat-Changing Moves (Examples):
- Swords Dance: Raises user's Attack by 2 stages. (TM03, found in the Rocket Hideout in Mahogany Town).
- Defense Curl: Raises user's Defense by 1 stage. (Learned by many Normal-type Pokémon).
- Agility: Raises user's Speed by 2 stages. (TM04, found in the Goldenrod Dept. Store).
- Screech: Lowers target's Defense by 2 stages. (Learned by many Normal/Flying-type Pokémon).
- Growl: Lowers target's Attack by 1 stage. (Common early-game move).
- Sand-Attack/Smokescreen: Lowers target's Accuracy by 1 stage. (Learned by Ground/Flying/Normal types).
- Cure Items:
- X Attack/Defense/Special/Speed: Raises the respective stat by 1 stage for the current battle. Purchased at Poké Marts.
- Guard Spec.: Prevents stat reduction for 5 turns. Purchased at Poké Marts.
- Full Restore: Does NOT cure stat changes.
- Switching out the Pokémon will reset all its stat changes.
- Strategy:
- Offensive Boosts: Use moves like Swords Dance or Agility to set up powerful sweeps. Combine with moves that hit hard.
- Defensive Boosts: Use moves like Amnesia (raises Special Defense by 2 stages) or Barrier (raises Defense by 2 stages) to tank hits, especially against Gym Leaders or the Elite Four.
- Stat Drops: Don't be afraid to use moves that lower opponent's stats. A -2 Defense drop from Screech can make a huge difference.
- Opponent's Boosts: If an opponent is boosting their stats, consider switching to a Pokémon that resists their attacks or using a move like Roar/Whirlwind to force them out, resetting their stat changes.
