Move Tutors

Move Tutors are special NPCs scattered throughout the Kanto region who can teach your Pokémon powerful moves that they might not learn naturally, or that are otherwise difficult to obtain. Unlike TMs, these moves can often be taught multiple times, though some tutors have specific requirements or limitations. Utilizing these tutors can significantly enhance your Pokémon's battle capabilities and open up new strategic options.

Understanding Move Tutors

Each Move Tutor specializes in a particular move or set of moves. While some are available from early in the game, others require you to progress further or meet certain conditions. It's crucial to know their locations and what they offer to optimize your team's movesets.

List of Move Tutors

1. Mega Punch & Mega Kick Tutor

  • Location: Route 5, in the Underpass connecting to Route 6.
  • Description: This gentleman is found inside the building that links Route 5 and Route 6. He offers to teach two powerful Normal-type moves.
  • Moves Taught:
    • Mega Punch: A strong physical Normal-type attack.
    • Mega Kick: An even stronger physical Normal-type attack, but with lower accuracy.
  • Requirements: No specific requirements other than finding him. Each move can be taught once per compatible Pokémon.
  • Strategy: Consider teaching these to physical attackers who lack a strong Normal-type STAB (Same-Type Attack Bonus) move or need a reliable neutral damage option. Mega Kick's power is tempting, but its accuracy can be a drawback in critical situations.

2. Mimic Tutor

  • Location: Saffron City, in the house directly south of the Fighting Dojo.
  • Description: A kind old lady resides in this house. She's looking for a specific item before she'll teach your Pokémon her unique move.
  • Move Taught:
    • Mimic: A Normal-type status move that allows the user to copy the last move used by the target. The copied move remains until the user switches out or the battle ends.
  • Requirements: You must give her a Poké Doll. You can purchase a Poké Doll from the Celadon Department Store on the 4th floor for 1,000 Pokedollars.
  • Strategy: Mimic can be a highly versatile move, especially in competitive play or against specific trainers. It allows your Pokémon to temporarily gain access to moves it normally wouldn't learn, potentially turning the tide of battle. It's a one-time use for the Poké Doll, but she can teach Mimic to any compatible Pokémon after that.

3. Metronome Tutor

  • Location: Cinnabar Island, inside the Pokémon Lab, in the room to the right.
  • Description: One of the scientists in the Pokémon Lab is an enthusiast of the unpredictable Metronome.
  • Move Taught:
    • Metronome: A Normal-type status move that randomly selects and uses almost any move in the game.
  • Requirements: No specific requirements.
  • Strategy: Metronome is primarily a fun and unpredictable move. While it can occasionally lead to devastating attacks, its randomness makes it unreliable for serious battles. It's more of a novelty for players who enjoy a bit of chaos.

4. Substitute Tutor

  • Location: Fuchsia City, in the house directly west of the Pokémon Center.
  • Description: An eccentric man in Fuchsia City is willing to share his knowledge of creating substitutes.
  • Move Taught:
    • Substitute: A Normal-type status move that creates a substitute doll using 1/4 of the user's maximum HP. The substitute absorbs damage and status conditions until its HP is depleted.
  • Requirements: No specific requirements.
  • Strategy: Substitute is an incredibly powerful and strategic move. It allows your Pokémon to set up stat boosts, avoid status conditions, or scout opponent moves safely. It's a staple in many competitive movesets and can be taught to any compatible Pokémon.

5. Dream Eater Tutor

  • Location: Viridian City, in the house where you initially received the Parcel for Professor Oak.
  • Description: After you've delivered the Parcel and progressed further in the game, the old man who was blocking the path will teach a move.
  • Move Taught:
    • Dream Eater: A Psychic-type special attack that deals damage and restores the user's HP by half the damage dealt. It only works if the target is asleep.
  • Requirements: You must have already delivered Oak's Parcel at the beginning of the game.
  • Strategy: Dream Eater pairs exceptionally well with Pokémon that can induce sleep, such as Hypno, Gengar, or those with access to moves like Hypnosis or Sleep Powder. It provides both damage and recovery, making it a potent combination for stalling or wearing down opponents.

Remember to check your Pokémon's compatibility with each move before attempting to teach it. These Move Tutors offer unique opportunities to customize your team and gain an edge in your journey through Kanto!
