Post-Game Challenges & Rematches

Congratulations, Trainer! Defeating the Elite Four and becoming the Champion of Kanto is a monumental achievement, but your journey is far from over. Pokémon FireRed and LeafGreen offer a wealth of post-game content, from challenging rematches to capturing legendary Pokémon and exploring new islands. Prepare your strongest team, stock up on supplies, and dive into these exciting new adventures!

Accessing the Sevii Islands

After your victory against the Elite Four, return to Pallet Town and speak with Professor Oak. He will commend your efforts and, if you have caught at least 60 different Pokémon, he will upgrade your Pokédex to the National Dex. This upgrade allows you to encounter and register Pokémon from beyond the original 150 Kanto species.

Once you have the National Dex, head to Cinnabar Island and enter the Pokémon Lab. Speak to Bill, who will be waiting there. He will ask for your help with a problem on One Island and offer to take you there. This initial trip to One Island is crucial for unlocking the rest of the Sevii Islands content.

The Sevii Islands: A New Frontier

The Sevii Islands are an archipelago southeast of Kanto, offering new areas to explore, unique Pokémon to catch, and a continuation of the Team Rocket storyline. Access to these islands is granted in stages:

  • Tri-Pass: Grants access to Islands One, Two, and Three. You receive this from Bill after helping Celio on One Island.
  • Rainbow Pass: Grants access to Islands Four, Five, Six, and Seven. You receive this from Celio after delivering the Meteorite to him on One Island.
One Island: Mt. Ember and the Ruby
  • Objective: Help Celio connect his PC system to the Hoenn region by finding the Ruby.
  • Walkthrough:
    1. Upon arrival with Bill, you'll meet Celio in the Pokémon Center. He explains his need for two special items, the Ruby and the Sapphire, to link the PC systems.
    2. Head north from the Pokémon Center through Kindle Road. Battle trainers and collect items along the way.
    3. Continue north to Mt. Ember. You'll need a Pokémon with Strength to move boulders and Rock Smash to clear paths.
    4. Navigate the volcanic caves. You'll encounter Team Rocket Grunts who are also searching for the Ruby.
    5. At the summit of Mt. Ember, you'll find the legendary Fire/Flying-type Pokémon, Moltres (Level 50). This is a one-time encounter. Be prepared with Ultra Balls, status-inducing moves (e.g., Sleep, Paralysis), and Pokémon that can withstand its powerful Fire-type attacks. Save your game before engaging!
    6. After dealing with Moltres (whether you catch it or not), proceed to the back of the cave where you'll find the Ruby.
    7. Return the Ruby to Celio in the One Island Pokémon Center. He will then give you the Tri-Pass, allowing you to travel between Islands One, Two, and Three.
  • Notable Items:
    • Max Revive (Kindle Road)
    • Charcoal (Mt. Ember)

    3. Before heading to Three Island, visit the house to the right of the Pokémon Center. Here, you'll find a specialized Move Tutor. He can teach powerful moves to your Pokémon in exchange for Mushrooms (Tiny Mushroom or Big Mushroom). The cost varies depending on the move. Some notable moves include:

    4. Engage the Hypno in battle. You can either defeat it or capture it; either way, Lostelle will be safe.
    5. After the Hypno is dealt with, Lostelle will thank you and return to her father on Two Island.
    6. Return to Two Island and speak to the Game Corner owner. As a reward for rescuing his daughter, he will give you a Meteorite.

    4. Inside, you'll encounter Lorelei of the Elite Four, who is battling Team Rocket Grunts. Assist her in defeating them in a series of double battles.
    5. After the Grunts are defeated, Lorelei will return to the Elite Four. You can now fully explore the rest of the cave.

Elite Four Rematches

Once you've completed the Sevii Islands storyline and obtained the National Dex, the Elite Four will have significantly stronger teams, offering a true test of your Pokémon training prowess. Their Pokémon will be at higher levels, often in the high 50s to mid-60s, and some may even have different movesets or hold items. Be prepared for a serious challenge!

  • Lorelei (Ice/Water): Her team will feature Pokémon like Lapras, Jynx, Cloyster, and Walrein, often in the high 50s to low 60s. Electric and Grass-type attacks are highly effective.
  • Bruno (Fighting/Rock): Expect a powerful lineup including Machamp, Hitmonchan, Hitmonlee, and Onix, with levels reaching the low 60s. Flying, Psychic, and Water-type moves are your best bet.
  • Agatha (Ghost/Poison): Her Gengar, Arbok, and Golbat will be formidable, with levels in the low to mid-60s. Psychic and Ground-type Pokémon are crucial here.
  • Lance (Dragon): The Dragon Master's team, including Dragonite, Gyarados, and Aerodactyl, will be in the mid-60s. Ice-type attacks are devastating against his Dragon-types.
  • Champion Blue (Mixed): Your rival's team will be the ultimate test, with Pokémon like Pidgeot, Alakazam, Rhydon, and Arcanine, all in the mid to high 60s. His starter Pokémon will also be fully evolved and powerful. A balanced team with diverse type coverage is essential.

Vs. Seeker Rematches

The Vs. Seeker, obtained early in the game, becomes an invaluable tool in the post-game. Many trainers you've previously battled throughout Kanto will be willing to rematch you, often with stronger, evolved Pokémon and higher levels. This is an excellent way to gain experience, money, and train your team for the Elite Four rematches or other challenges. Simply use the Vs. Seeker in an area where you've battled trainers, and if an exclamation mark appears above their head, they're ready for a rematch!

Legendary Pokémon Hunts

Beyond Moltres and Articuno on the Sevii Islands, several other legendary Pokémon await discovery in Kanto:

  • Zapdos: Found in the Power Plant, located east of Cerulean City (requires Surf). Zapdos is Level 50. Bring Electric-resistant Pokémon and plenty of Ultra Balls.
  • Mewtwo: Located in the Cerulean Cave (also known as Unknown Dungeon), west of Cerulean City (requires Surf). You can only access Cerulean Cave after defeating the Elite Four and obtaining the National Dex. Mewtwo is Level 70, making it one of the toughest captures in the game. Save before encountering it, bring a strong team, and be ready for a long battle.
  • Raikou, Entei, Suicune (Roamers): After obtaining the National Dex, one of these legendary beasts will roam Kanto, depending on your starter Pokémon:
    • If you chose Bulbasaur, Entei (Fire-type) will roam.
    • If you chose Charmander, Suicune (Water-type) will roam.
    • If you chose Squirtle, Raikou (Electric-type) will roam.
These Pokémon are Level 50 and will flee after the first turn in battle. Use a Pokémon with Mean Look or Arena Trap/Shadow Tag to prevent their escape. Their location can be tracked on your Pokédex map.

Trainer House (Viridian City)

After acquiring the National Dex, the Trainer House in Viridian City becomes accessible. Here, you can battle several trainers, including a clone of your rival's team (though not as strong as the Elite Four rematch version). This provides another opportunity for experience and money, and the trainers change daily.
