Legendary Pokémon Locations & Capture

Capturing Legendary Pokémon in FireRed and LeafGreen is a challenging but rewarding endeavor. These powerful creatures are often hidden away and require specific conditions or items to encounter. This section will guide you through finding and catching each of Kanto's legendary beasts and birds.

General Capture Strategy

Before attempting to catch any Legendary Pokémon, ensure you are well-prepared. Here's a general strategy:

  • Save Your Game: Always save directly in front of the Legendary Pokémon before initiating battle. This allows you to reset and try again if you accidentally knock it out or run out of Poké Balls.
  • High-Level Pokémon: Bring a team of high-level Pokémon (ideally Level 50-70+) to withstand their powerful attacks.
  • Status Conditions: Inflict status conditions like Sleep or Paralysis. Sleep is generally more effective for capture rates. Avoid Poison or Burn, as they deal damage over time and could accidentally knock out the Legendary.
  • False Swipe/Hold Back: A Pokémon with False Swipe or Hold Back (moves that leave the opponent with at least 1 HP) is invaluable for safely lowering their HP without KO'ing them. Scyther or Pinsir can learn False Swipe via TM54.
  • Poké Ball Variety: Stock up on several Poké Balls. Ultra Balls are your primary tool. Timer Balls become more effective as the battle drags on, and Dusk Balls are useful if you're playing at night (though less relevant for fixed encounters). Master Balls, if you still have one, guarantee capture but are best saved for a truly desperate situation or a particularly annoying roaming legendary.
  • Repels: Use Max Repels or Super Repels to avoid unwanted wild encounters while navigating caves or routes.

Articuno: The Freezing Bird

Articuno, the Ice/Flying legendary bird, resides deep within the Seafoam Islands.

  1. Prerequisites: You'll need HM03 Surf and HM04 Strength to navigate the Seafoam Islands.
  2. Location: Head to Route 20 and Surf west until you reach the Seafoam Islands.
  3. Navigation:
    • Enter the cave and immediately go down the ladder.
    • Push the boulder to the right into the hole using Strength.
    • Go down the next ladder. Push another boulder into the hole.
    • Continue down the ladders, pushing boulders into holes to create currents. The goal is to fall into the water on the lowest level.
    • Once in the water, Surf north to find Articuno waiting on a small island.
  4. Capture Strategy: Articuno is Level 50. Its Ice Beam and Blizzard can be devastating. Consider bringing a Fire or Electric-type Pokémon to chip away at its HP, but be cautious of its STAB Ice moves. Paralyze or Sleep it, then use Ultra Balls.

Zapdos: The Electric Bird

Zapdos, the Electric/Flying legendary bird, makes its nest in the abandoned Power Plant.

  1. Prerequisites: You need HM03 Surf.
  2. Location: From Lavender Town, head north to Route 10. Surf east on the small body of water until you reach the entrance to the Power Plant.
  3. Navigation: The Power Plant is a maze of machinery and dead ends. There are no puzzles, just careful navigation.
    • From the entrance, head right, then up, then left, then up again.
    • Follow the path, taking the first right, then up, then left, then down.
    • Continue left, then up, then right, then down, then right again.
    • Head up and then left. You'll find Zapdos in a large open area.
  4. Capture Strategy: Zapdos is Level 50. Its Electric attacks (Thunderbolt, Drill Peck) are powerful. Ground-type Pokémon are immune to its Electric attacks, making them excellent tanks. Inflict Sleep or Paralysis and use Ultra Balls.

Moltres: The Fiery Bird

Moltres, the Fire/Flying legendary bird, resides atop Mt. Ember on One Island.

  1. Prerequisites: You must have completed the main story and gained access to the Sevii Islands. You'll need HM04 Strength.
  2. Location: Fly to One Island. Head north from the Pokémon Center and Surf east to reach Mt. Ember.
  3. Navigation:
    • Enter Mt. Ember and follow the path. You'll encounter Team Rocket Grunts initially, but after defeating them, the path to Moltres opens up.
    • Use Strength to push boulders and clear paths. The path is relatively linear, involving a few ladders and boulder puzzles.
    • Eventually, you'll reach the summit where Moltres is waiting.
  4. Capture Strategy: Moltres is Level 50. Its Fire Spin and Flamethrower can be dangerous. Rock-type Pokémon take super effective damage from its Fire attacks, so avoid them. Water or Electric-type Pokémon can deal good damage. Inflict Sleep or Paralysis and use Ultra Balls.

Mewtwo: The Genetic Pokémon

Mewtwo, the powerful Psychic-type legendary, is found in the depths of Cerulean Cave.

  1. Prerequisites: You must have defeated the Elite Four and become the Champion. You'll need HM03 Surf and HM04 Strength.
  2. Location: After becoming Champion, head to Cerulean City. Surf north across the water where the Nugget Bridge is, and you'll find the entrance to Cerulean Cave (also known as the Unknown Dungeon). A guard will now allow you entry.
  3. Navigation: Cerulean Cave is a challenging maze.
    • 1F: From the entrance, Surf across the water to the north. Go up the ladder.
    • 2F: Navigate this floor, pushing boulders with Strength. The goal is to find another ladder leading down. This floor is particularly confusing. Generally, head west, then south, then east, looking for the ladder.
    • B1F: This floor has a large body of water. Surf to the north-west corner of the water to find a small patch of land with Mewtwo.
  4. Capture Strategy: Mewtwo is Level 70, making it the highest-level wild Pokémon in the game. It possesses incredible Special Attack and Speed. Dark-type Pokémon are immune to its Psychic attacks, making them excellent for tanking hits. However, Dark-types are rare in FireRed/LeafGreen. Consider using a strong Ghost or Bug-type. Inflict Sleep or Paralysis immediately. This is a prime candidate for a Master Ball if you still have it, otherwise, be prepared for a long battle with many Ultra Balls.

Raikou, Entei, and Suicune: The Roaming Beasts

These three legendary dogs roam Kanto after you defeat the Elite Four. Only one will appear in your game, determined by your starter Pokémon:

  • If you chose Bulbasaur: Entei will roam Kanto.
  • If you chose Charmander: Suicune will roam Kanto.
  • If you chose Squirtle: Raikou will roam Kanto.

They are Level 50 and will flee on the first turn unless trapped. Their locations are random, changing every time you enter or exit a building, or use Fly.

  1. Prerequisites: Defeat the Elite Four.
  2. Location: They can appear on any route in Kanto.
  3. Tracking Strategy:
    • Pokémon with Mean Look/Arena Trap/Shadow Tag: The most effective way to catch a roaming legendary is to use a Pokémon with an ability or move that prevents escape.
      • Mean Look: Gastly (evolves into Haunter/Gengar), Golbat (evolves into Crobat in later generations, but still learns Mean Look), Umbreon (requires trading from another game or specific breeding).
      • Arena Trap: Diglett/Dugtrio.
      • Shadow Tag: Wobbuffet.
    • Repel Trick: Have a Pokémon at Level 49 (or lower, but higher than any other wild Pokémon on the route) at the front of your party. Use a Max Repel. This will prevent encounters with lower-level Pokémon, increasing the chance of encountering the Level 50 legendary.
    • Fly/Route Cycling: Fly to a city, then immediately walk onto a route. If the legendary isn't there, Fly back to the city and repeat. Check your Pokédex to see its current location.
  4. Capture Strategy: Once you encounter and trap the legendary, the strategy is similar to other legendaries:
    • Lower its HP carefully (False Swipe is ideal).
    • Inflict a status condition (Sleep or Paralysis).
    • Throw Ultra Balls.
    • If it escapes, it retains its HP and status condition, making the next encounter easier.
