Item Duplication Glitches
While not an intended feature, several glitches exist in Pokémon FireRed and LeafGreen that allow players to duplicate valuable items. These can be incredibly useful for obtaining multiple rare candies, master balls, or other hard-to-find consumables and held items. Always remember to save your game *before* attempting any glitch, as there's always a small risk of unintended consequences, though these are generally safe.
The "Box Trick" Duplication Method
This is the most reliable and widely used item duplication glitch in FireRed and LeafGreen. It involves manipulating the game's saving mechanics when interacting with the Pokémon Storage System.
Prerequisites:
- Access to any Pokémon Center with a PC.
- At least two Pokémon in your party.
- The item you wish to duplicate.
- An empty slot in your PC box.
Step-by-Step Guide:
- Prepare Your Pokémon: Give the item you want to duplicate to a Pokémon in your party. For example, if you want more Rare Candies, give one Rare Candy to your starter Pokémon.
- Access the PC: Go to any Pokémon Center and interact with the PC. Select "Bill's PC" from the menu.
- Deposit the Item Holder: Choose "Move Pokémon" and then "Deposit". Select the Pokémon holding the item you wish to duplicate and deposit it into an empty slot in any PC Box.
- Change Boxes: After depositing the Pokémon, select "Change Box". The game will ask you if you want to save the game. This is the crucial step!
- The Critical Timing:
- When the game asks "Would you like to save the game?", select "Yes".
- As soon as the message "Saving... Don't turn off the power." appears on the screen, turn off your Game Boy Advance (or emulator) immediately. The timing needs to be precise – you want to interrupt the save process right after the "Saving..." message begins, but before it completes.
- Reboot and Verify: Turn your Game Boy Advance back on and load your save file.
- Check Your Items:
- Go to the PC and check the box where you deposited your Pokémon. The Pokémon should still be there, holding the duplicated item.
- Now, check your party. The Pokémon that was holding the item before you deposited it should also still be in your party, and it will also be holding the duplicated item!
- Repeat for More: You can repeat this process as many times as you like to get an unlimited supply of your desired item.
Example Scenario: Duplicating a Master Ball
Let's say you've just received your first Master Ball from Silph Co. and want more for those pesky legendary Pokémon.
- Give the Master Ball to your Pikachu.
- Go to a Pokémon Center PC, select "Bill's PC", then "Move Pokémon".
- Deposit Pikachu into Box 1 (ensure there's an empty slot).
- Select "Change Box". When prompted "Would you like to save the game?", select "Yes".
- Immediately turn off your GBA the moment "Saving..." appears.
- Turn your GBA back on and load your game.
- Check your party: Pikachu is there, holding a Master Ball.
- Check Box 1: Another Pikachu is there, also holding a Master Ball.
- You now have two Master Balls!
Important Considerations:
- Save Before Attempting: Always, always save your game normally before trying this glitch. If you mess up the timing and corrupt your save, you'll be glad you had a backup.
- Not All Items: This glitch works for most held items and consumable items. Key Items generally cannot be duplicated this way.
- Pokémon Duplication: As a side effect, the Pokémon holding the item will also be duplicated. This can be useful for obtaining multiple copies of rare Pokémon or for trading.
- Emulator Save States: If playing on an emulator, you can use save states to practice the timing without risk. Save right before you select "Yes" to save the game, then reload if you miss the timing.
