Viridian Forest & Pewter City Arrival
Welcome, aspiring Pokémon Trainer! After the initial excitement of Pallet Town and the brief journey through Route 1 and Viridian City, your true adventure begins. The path to the first Gym Leader, Brock, lies through the mysterious Viridian Forest and into the ancient town of Pewter City. This section will guide you through every step, ensuring you're fully prepared for the challenges ahead.
Navigating Viridian Forest: Bug-Catching & Training Grounds
Viridian Forest is your first significant area outside of a town, serving as an excellent training ground for your starter Pokémon and an opportunity to catch some early-game Bug-type and Electric-type Pokémon. It's a relatively straightforward maze, but don't rush through it!
Wild Pokémon Encounters
The forest is teeming with specific Pokémon. Take your time to encounter and potentially catch these valuable additions to your team:
- Caterpie (Bug) / Weedle (Bug/Poison): Depending on your version (Caterpie in FireRed, Weedle in LeafGreen), these are common. They evolve quickly into Butterfree/Beedrill, which can be surprisingly useful early on, especially Butterfree with its Sleep Powder.
- Metapod (Bug) / Kakuna (Bug/Poison): The evolved forms of Caterpie/Weedle, also found here.
- Pikachu (Electric): A rare but highly sought-after encounter. If you want an Electric-type for later challenges (especially against Flying and Water types), this is your first chance. Be patient, as its encounter rate is low.
Important Items to Collect
Keep an eye out for these crucial items scattered throughout the forest. They're vital for your journey!
- Potion (x2): Restores 20 HP. Essential for keeping your team healthy between battles.
- Antidote (x1): Cures Poison status. Several Bug-type Pokémon here can inflict Poison.
- Poké Ball (x1): An extra chance to catch a new Pokémon.
Trainer Battles: Experience & Strategy
There are several Bug Catcher trainers in Viridian Forest. Each battle is an opportunity to gain experience points (EXP) for your Pokémon, making them stronger for the challenges ahead. Do not avoid these trainers! Battling every single one is highly recommended for optimal early-game progression.
Here's a breakdown of the trainers you'll face:
| Trainer | Pokémon | Level | Type | Reward |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Bug Catcher Rick | Caterpie | Lvl 6 | Bug | 60 Pokedollars |
| Bug Catcher Doug | Weedle | Lvl 6 | Bug/Poison | 60 Pokedollars |
| Bug Catcher Sammy | Caterpie | Lvl 6 | Bug | 60 Pokedollars |
| Bug Catcher Anthony | Weedle | Lvl 7 | Bug/Poison | 70 Pokedollars |
| Bug Catcher Charlie | Caterpie | Lvl 7 | Bug | 70 Pokedollars |
Strategy Tip: Most of these trainers use Bug-type Pokémon. If you chose Charmander, its Ember attack will be super effective. Bulbasaur's Vine Whip is also effective. Squirtle might struggle a bit more, but Tackle is still reliable. Watch out for Poison attacks from Weedle/Kakuna and use your Antidote if needed.
Exiting the Forest
Once you've battled all the trainers and collected the items, you'll find the exit to the north. Step out, and you've successfully navigated Viridian Forest!
Pewter City Arrival: First Steps & Preparation for Brock
Congratulations! You've made it to Pewter City, a historic town nestled at the foot of a mountain. This city is home to the first Pokémon Gym and its formidable leader, Brock. But before challenging him, there are a few crucial steps to take.
Heal Up at the Pokémon Center
Your first priority upon entering any new town should always be the Pokémon Center. It's the large building with a red roof. Speak to the nurse at the counter to fully heal your entire team for free. You can also access your PC to deposit or withdraw Pokémon.
Stock Up at the Poké Mart
Located next to the Pokémon Center, the Poké Mart is where you can purchase essential supplies. Now is a good time to stock up on:
- Potions: Always have a good supply.
- Antidotes: If you're low after Viridian Forest.
- Poké Balls: You'll want more for future routes.
Explore the City
Pewter City has a few interesting spots:
- Pewter Museum of Science: While you can't fully explore it yet (you'll need Cut later), you can speak to NPCs inside for some lore.
- NPCs: Talk to everyone! They often provide helpful hints, tips, or even free items. One NPC in a house will offer to trade a Spearow for a Farfetch'd (though you won't have a Farfetch'd yet).
Preparing for Brock: The Rock-Solid Challenge
Brock, the Pewter City Gym Leader, specializes in Rock-type Pokémon. This means your Grass and Water-type Pokémon will have a significant advantage, while Fire-type Pokémon will struggle immensely. Understanding type matchups is critical here!
Brock's Team
Brock uses two Pokémon:
- Geodude: Level 12 (Rock/Ground)
- Onix: Level 14 (Rock/Ground)
Both are immune to Electric-type attacks and take super effective damage from Water and Grass-type moves. They also have high Defense stats.
Recommended Pokémon & Strategy
Your success against Brock largely depends on your starter and any Pokémon you've caught and trained.
- Bulbasaur (Starter): The easiest path. Its Vine Whip attack is 4x super effective against Rock/Ground types. Train it to at least Level 13-14 to ensure it can withstand a hit or two.
- Squirtle (Starter): Also a strong contender. Its Water Gun attack is 4x super effective. Train it to Level 13-14.
- Charmander (Starter): This will be your toughest challenge. Fire-type moves are not effective against Rock types. You'll need to rely on its Normal-type moves like Scratch or Ember (which is not very effective).
- Alternative for Charmander users: Your best bet is to catch a Nidoran♂ or Nidoran♀ on Route 22 (west of Viridian City, accessible from Viridian City). Train it to Level 12-14. Nidoran learns Double Kick, a Fighting-type move that is super effective against Rock types. This is highly recommended if you chose Charmander.
- Another option: If you caught a Mankey on Route 22, its Low Kick or Karate Chop (if it learns it by this level) will also be super effective.
- Pikachu (Electric): Unfortunately, Pikachu is ineffective against Rock/Ground types due to their Ground typing. Do not rely on it for this battle.
General Tips for the Gym Battle
- Level Up: Ensure your main attacking Pokémon are at least Level 12-14.
- Heal Items: Bring 3-5 Potions into the battle. You might need them to keep your key Pokémon in the fight.
- Status Conditions: Brock's Pokémon don't inflict many status conditions, but focus on dealing damage.
- Trainer Battles: Before Brock, you'll face one Junior Trainer in the Gym. This is a good warm-up and last chance for EXP.
Once you feel adequately prepared, step into the Pewter City Gym. The path to your first Gym Badge awaits!
