Unobtainable Shiny Pokémon & Hidden Abilities
Welcome, dedicated trainers! In your quest to truly "catch 'em all" in their most elusive forms, it's crucial to understand the limitations within Pokémon Omega Ruby and Alpha Sapphire regarding Shiny Pokémon and Hidden Abilities. Not every Pokémon can be legitimately obtained with every possible combination, and knowing these restrictions will save you countless hours of fruitless searching.
Shiny Locked Pokémon
Certain legendary and event Pokémon in ORAS are "Shiny Locked," meaning their game data prevents them from ever appearing in their Shiny coloration, regardless of how many times you soft reset or encounter them. Attempting to obtain a Shiny version of these Pokémon through in-game methods is impossible. If you encounter a Shiny version of any of the Pokémon listed below, it is unequivocally a hacked Pokémon.
- Kyogre (Alpha Sapphire) / Groudon (Omega Ruby): The primary legendary of your version, encountered during the main story, is Shiny Locked.
- Rayquaza: The legendary Dragon/Flying type encountered during the Delta Episode is Shiny Locked.
- Deoxys: Encountered immediately after Rayquaza during the Delta Episode, Deoxys is also Shiny Locked.
- Cosplay Pikachu: This unique Pikachu, obtained in Slateport City's Contest Hall, is Shiny Locked and cannot be bred.
- Gift Pokémon (Specific Instances): While many gift Pokémon can be Shiny, certain story-critical gift Pokémon, like the starter Pokémon you receive at the beginning of the game (Treecko, Torchic, Mudkip), are Shiny Locked.
Strategy for Legitimate Shinies: For Pokémon not on this list, your best bet for Shiny hunting involves methods like the DexNav chaining (for wild Pokémon), the Masuda Method (for breeding), or soft resetting for static encounters (for non-locked legendaries like Reshiram, Zekrom, etc.). Always ensure you save before encountering a potentially Shiny-locked Pokémon if you're unsure, though for the above, it's a wasted effort.
Unobtainable Hidden Abilities
Hidden Abilities (HAs) add another layer of complexity to Pokémon collecting. While many Pokémon can be found with their Hidden Abilities through various in-game methods, some Pokémon simply cannot legitimately possess their Hidden Ability in Pokémon Omega Ruby and Alpha Sapphire. This is often due to them being event-exclusive, legendary, or only available through specific in-game encounters that don't allow for HAs.
Pokémon with Currently Unobtainable Hidden Abilities in ORAS:
- Legendary Pokémon: Most legendary Pokémon, especially those caught in the wild or through static encounters in ORAS (e.g., Latias/Latios, Regirock, Regice, Registeel, Heatran, Cresselia, etc.), will always have their standard ability. Their Hidden Abilities are typically reserved for special distributions or future games.
- Starter Pokémon (Initial Gift): The Treecko, Torchic, and Mudkip you receive at the start of your adventure will always have their standard abilities. To obtain their Hidden Abilities (Unburden, Speed Boost, and Damp, respectively), you must breed them from parents that already possess the Hidden Ability, or find them in the wild via the DexNav after completing the game (which is how you'd find a HA starter in the wild).
- Fossil Pokémon (Initial Revivals): The first fossil Pokémon you revive (e.g., Lileep, Anorith, etc.) will always have their standard abilities. Similar to starters, you'll need to breed them or find them through specific post-game methods (like DexNav) to get their Hidden Abilities.
- In-Game Trades: Pokémon received through in-game trades will always have their standard abilities.
How to Obtain Hidden Abilities (When Possible):
For Pokémon that *can* have their Hidden Abilities in ORAS, here are the primary methods:
- DexNav Chaining: This is your most reliable method for wild Pokémon. After encountering a Pokémon in the wild, use the DexNav's Search function. As your search level increases and you chain encounters, the likelihood of finding a Pokémon with its Hidden Ability significantly rises. Look for the "!" icon on the DexNav screen indicating a special encounter, which often includes HAs.
- Friend Safari (from X/Y): While not directly in ORAS, if you transfer Pokémon from Pokémon X or Y, Pokémon caught in the Friend Safari have a high chance of possessing their Hidden Abilities.
- Breeding: If you have a female Pokémon with its Hidden Ability, there's an 80% chance it will pass down its Hidden Ability to its offspring when bred with any compatible male Pokémon (or Ditto). If you have a male Pokémon with its Hidden Ability and breed it with Ditto, there's a 60% chance the offspring will inherit the HA.
- Special Events/Distributions: Keep an eye out for official Nintendo/Pokémon Company events. These often distribute Pokémon with their Hidden Abilities that might otherwise be difficult or impossible to obtain.
Understanding these limitations is key to a legitimate and fulfilling collecting experience in Hoenn. Happy hunting, trainers!
