Pokémon Evolutions

Evolving your Pokémon is a cornerstone of any trainer's journey in Hoenn, transforming your beloved companions into more powerful forms with enhanced stats and often new abilities. While many Pokémon evolve simply by gaining experience and leveling up, others require specific items, conditions, or even trading. Understanding these methods is crucial for completing your Pokédex and building a formidable team.

Level-Up Evolutions

The most common method of evolution, many Pokémon will evolve once they reach a certain level. Simply battle, use Exp. Share, or give them Rare Candies to reach the required level. Once they do, the evolution sequence will trigger automatically after the battle or item use.

  • Example: Treecko evolves into Grovyle at Level 16, and Grovyle evolves into Sceptile at Level 36.
  • Strategy: To quickly level up Pokémon, consider battling trainers, using the Lucky Egg (obtained from Professor Cozmo in Fallarbor Town after the Meteor Falls event), or participating in rematches with trainers via the Vs. Seeker.

Stone Evolutions

Certain Pokémon require a specific Evolution Stone to evolve. These items are consumed upon use, so choose wisely! You can find these stones scattered across Hoenn or purchase them from specific vendors.

Friendship Evolutions

Some Pokémon evolve when they have a high friendship level with you and then level up. You can check a Pokémon's friendship level with the Friendship Checker app on your PokéNav Plus, or by speaking to the woman in Verdanturf Town's Pokémon Fan Club.

  • How to Increase Friendship:
    • Walk with the Pokémon in your party.
    • Give them vitamins (HP Up, Protein, etc.).
    • Get haircuts in Mauville City.
    • Use Soothe Bells (held item found in Slateport City's Pokémon Fan Club) to boost friendship gains.
    • Avoid letting them faint in battle.
  • Examples:
    • Golbat into Crobat
    • Chansey into Blissey
    • Eevee into Espeon (level up during the day with high friendship)
    • Eevee into Umbreon (level up during the night with high friendship)
    • Pichu into Pikachu
    • Cleffa into Clefairy
    • Igglybuff into Jigglypuff
    • Azurill into Marill
    • Munchlax into Snorlax
    • Togepi into Togetic

Location-Based Evolutions

A select few Pokémon evolve when they level up in a specific in-game location.

  • Magneton into Magnezone: Level up in the New Mauville area.
  • Nosepass into Probopass: Level up in the New Mauville area.
  • Eevee into Leafeon: Level up near the Moss Rock in Petalburg Woods.
  • Eevee into Glaceon: Level up near the Ice Rock in Shoal Cave (requires low tide).

Time-Based Evolutions

Some evolutions depend on the in-game time of day (day or night) when the Pokémon levels up or meets other conditions.

  • Eevee into Espeon: Level up during the day with high friendship.
  • Eevee into Umbreon: Level up during the night with high friendship.
  • Snorunt (male only) into Glalie: Level up at any time.
  • Snorunt (female only) into Froslass: Use a Dawn Stone.

Other Special Conditions

A few Pokémon have unique evolution requirements:

  • Feebas into Milotic: Evolve by leveling up while its Beauty condition is maxed out.
    • Strategy: Feed Feebas Blue Pokéblocks (made from Blue, Indigo, or Moomoo Berries in the Pokéblock Kit) to maximize its Beauty. The Pokéblock Kit is obtained from the Contest Hall in Slateport City.
  • Nincada into Ninjask and Shedinja: Evolve Nincada into Ninjask at Level 20. If you have an empty slot in your party and a spare Poké Ball in your bag, a Shedinja will also appear.
  • Tyrogue into Hitmonlee, Hitmonchan, or Hitmontop: Evolves at Level 20 based on its Attack and Defense stats.
    • Hitmonlee: Attack > Defense
    • Hitmonchan: Defense > Attack
    • Hitmontop: Attack = Defense
    • Strategy: Use Protein (raises Attack) or Iron (raises Defense) to influence its stats before reaching Level 20.

Remember to always check a Pokémon's specific evolution method if you're unsure. The in-game Pokédex often provides hints, and speaking to NPCs can sometimes offer clues. Happy evolving, trainer!
